Highlights.

The name “Petra tu Romiu,” which the cove bears, means “the Rock of the Romies.” This name, just like the myth of Aphrodite, is steeped in legend. Neighboring Petra tou Romiou, the sea cecure is called Saracen’s Rock. The protagonist of the Byzantine poem “Digenis Acritus” was born of a union between a Christianized Syrian emir and the daughter of a Greek, a Roman stratigue. His name Digenis translates from Greek as “twice-born.” When Saracenic pirates tried to invade Cyprus, Digenis dropped a huge rock on them from the top of Troodos. It fell into the sea, where it lies to this day.

The sea near the rock of Aphrodite is usually choppy, so tourists are not recommended to swim far. Most tourists are limited to swimming near the Greek Rock, which protrudes from the sea in shallow water. We should take into account that the bottom of the bay is stony, so it is better to swim here wearing shoes. It is forbidden to climb the kekur itself.

You can visit the rock of Aphrodite at any time. The parking lot is on the opposite side of the road from the sea. In order tourists can safely reach the sea shore, under the road made a passage. Near the parking there is a restaurant, a shower and a souvenir store.

The myth of the birth of Aphrodite

According to Greek mythology, the birth of the goddess Aphrodite was very unusual. Her mother, Gaea, goddess of the earth and not willing to put up with the betrayal of her husband Uranus, appealed to her son Cronus for help. He cut Uranus down with a sickle and threw his genitals into the sea. Drops of blood in the sea turned into snow-white foam and the beautiful Aphrodite was born from it. The name of the goddess itself comes from the Greek word “ἀφρός” meaning foam.

The goddess Aphrodite emerged from the sea naked, standing on a shell. In ancient times the shell symbolized the vulva. When the young goddess reached the coast and stepped on the ground, flowers began to appear in place of her footsteps, grass grew, and the air was full of wonderful smells. On the shore, Aphrodite was met by the goddesses of the seasons, the Oracles, who were in charge of the order of nature. They clothed Aphrodite in a garment embroidered with gold, and on her head they placed a fragrant wreath.

According to legend, the part of the sea where the young goddess emerged from the foam marks a special stone – the “Rock of Rome” or “Rock of Aphrodite”. The plot of the birth of the goddess was reflected in vases, wall paintings, sculptures and paintings. Works by such famous artists as Sandro Botticelli, Titian, Rubens, Ingres, Gustave Moreau and Pablo Picasso are dedicated to the ancient myth.

The Cult of Aphrodite

The veneration of the goddess of love originated in Cyprus in pre-Christian times. The Cypriots believe that after her birth Aphrodite began to live in Palais-Pafos, and the locals built a beautiful temple in her honor.

To this day, Cyprus is called the island of love. Every year in early autumn, the international Aphrodite Opera Festival is held at the medieval castle of Paphos. Performances and concerts take place on the square in front of the castle. The festival program involves companies from the best opera houses in the world, performing works by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Jacques Offenbach, Georges Bizet and Mozart.
