When asked what is the most mysterious and mystical place in Kiev, the first answer you will hear is “Lysaya Gora”. What can be more mysterious than a place of witches’ Sabbaths? Especially since such a status is sanctified by the authority of the classics, starting with Orest Somov and Alexander Pushkin. True, concerning the direction where to go, there are discrepancies

The thing is that Kiev abounds with hills, «bald»of them five pieces, and associated with some devilry — slightly less than all of them. It’s not hard to get confused.For example, from ancient times, the hill on which the monument to Motherland is located now used to be notorious. People didn’t live there, there was only a cemetery. That’s why it was so easy to find a vacant site next to the densely populated Pechersk. Near Kirill mountain, where the church of the same name stands, there was a small river Smorodina (named — Smorodinsky descent), in cave on slope of which lived Snake, defeated by Kirill (Nikita) Kozhemyaka…In the guide of 1912 it is mentioned that «from Rusanovsky bridge to village. Vygurovschina is the Bald Hill — the favorite place of Kiev, foreigners and even foreign witches». This hill was torn down during the building of residential area on Voskresenka in the 1970s. But mostly two mountains are called bald: Lysaya proper and Zamkovaya in the very center of historical Kiev. Not less mysterious is mountain Shchekavitsa, which is not called bald. From the northern side there was a steep mountain, which ended at the very court. When I looked at it from below, it seemed even steeper, and in some places irregular stalks of lean weeds protruded from its high summit, and blackened in the light sky. Its naked, clayy appearance made it look dreary. The description of the mountain from Gogol’s  Vieja» fully corresponds to the Kiev loess hills. Nowadays their slopes are buried in verdure, but at the beginning of the last century they were bare. Of course, the farmstead, described by Gogol, is located 50 versts from Kiev. But then one would not be able to see the domes of Kiev churches…Lysaya Gora is behind the valley of the river Lybedi and became a part of the city quite late. In any case, in Gogol’s time it was situated far away from the city. There are many versions of the origin of the name. According to one of them, Devich-mountain — an ancient ritual hill, the top of which was periodically scorched by lightning. It is assumed that here was one of the large pre-Christian temples, the remains of which are not preserved, as well as hermitages or even a monastery of Christian elders. The legend says that in 1240 the citizens of Kiev took refuge here in dungeons, and the Tartars walled up the ways out, and at the beginning of the 18th century by order of Peter the Great a fortress was built with huge underground reservoirs in which the builders were drowned. All this is not true, but partly such stories have real& history — for example, during the Mongol invasion really killed the monks of Vydubitsky monastery, who tried to hide in underground galleries.Despite dubious fame, there were monastic apiaries on mountain. In 1872 the building of Lysogorskiy fort of the grand Kyiv fortress started, which should have covered the city from the south. Since 1906 the fort was used for executions. In particular, Dmitry Bogrov, an assassin of Stolypin, was executed here.

In 1941 the last defenders of Kiev defended on the ramparts of the old fort, and later there was a repair base  Tigers» and a Soviet military unit.In 1994 the territory of the mountain became a landscape park. Unofficially it is divided into three parts  — Mermaid’s Yar, Witches’ Yar, and Dead Man’s Grove. But this is, of course, a joke.Now the Bald Mountain is considered a «place of power  supporters of various esoteric currents often visit it, modern pagans hold their meetings. However, the rumors about  Sabbaths and dark rituals, about gates into the otherworld and restless souls of Kievan people executed by Batyi, probably refer to modern times. But it is not in vain Bulgakov described in & ‖The White Guard,‖ the explosion of magazines exactly on the -Lysa Hora‖, even though he knew perfectly well that it occurred on the -nbsp;Zverinets (in the botanical garden and  now visible traces of manmade disasters). By the way, the Bulgakov critics suppose that Margarita flew here — to Kiev, under Bald mountain…Castle mountainThe castle mountain is known by many names — Horevitsa (in honor of one of the legendary founders of Kiev; legendary founders of Kiev), Kiselevka (in honor of the Kiev Kashtelan and military commander, an Orthodox nobleman Adam Kisel), Florovsky Hill (in honor of the adjacent Florovsky monastery from Podol side). In fact, this is a part of the Starokyivska mountain, which has been inhabited since ancient times. Many settlements of ancient cultures were found here. It is considered that on the Zamkova Mountain there was a castle of the legendary Kiy (if it really existed), and the original citadel of the historic Kiev at Askold and Dir. Since the XIV century and up to 1651 there was a castle of Lithuanian, and then Polish governor. After the castle was burned by Cossacks of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, there was no permanent settlement here. According to a modern legend, the mountain does not bear any dictate to itself and all the buildings with itself.On the fact that the Castle Hill was traditionally a place of military settlements, indicates the name of the hill on the other side of the Andreevsky descent — Uzdyhalnitsa, or Vozdyhalnitsa. According to the legend, the women were not allowed to get into the fortress, and they used to climb the top of the mountain in order to see their loved ones at least from a distance. Officially they were buried there till 1921, unofficially till —up to the beginning of the 1950s (the author saw some graves after the war). After the war and up to the beginning of the 1990s there was a radio mast-«jammer».A funny thing — the part of the mountain where the cemetery is. Where the graves end, there end also trees… It is likely that this feature has allowed to consider the mountain «bald» but many other stories associated with it. For example, it was told that nuns disappeared on the mountain, and if they came back, they were younger, that a certain monk Philaret (not the one who today calls himself patriarch) flew over the mountain on a pomegranate, that there was a funeral service on the mountain; The mountain was used by witches in the guise of wolves, and witches were buried in the cemetery (in fact, no — women suspected of witchcraft were not blessed to be buried in cemeteries).

Now the pagans gather on the mountain, even building an altar on which they offer sacrifices to their gods (quite innocuous bread and fruit). Satanists gather at the cemetery at night. They are especially fond of the remains of the chapel, which looks like a crypt. Modern witches gather there for their gatherings (no, no one saw Yulia Tymoshenko there). And & ëquo;Kyiv landscape initiative & raquo; (there was a free association of artists from & nbsp;word «hudo») decorated the mountain with several concrete objects of unknown purpose. So goes the mighty Oleg from court,With him Igor and old guests,And they see —On hill,at the bank of the Dnieper,Lay noble bones. In 1821 Alexander Pushkin in search of the grave of Prophetic Oleg ascended exactly on Shchekavitsa, another name of which — Oleg’s mountain. During the archaeological excavations in Shchekavitsa in 1982 found the remains of a stone building, dating back to the XII-XIII centuries. And so remains unclear why the name of the companion legendary Kiya called the hill, which people began to settle only in XIX century. In the XVII century the hill was called Biskupskaya because it was given for the use of a Catholic bishop, whose residence was in Podol. The mountain was quite useful — on its;flat top wheat was grown.According to the historians of the XIX;century, «when the Dnieper began to invade the middle of the Podol (it;s meant the devastating flood of 1619. The citizens of Kiev were given by king Sigismund III the privilege to Shchekavitsa mountain» with strong floods to disturb people. Only in 1772 in  during a terrible plague epidemic priests refused to bury people in parish pogosts, and the first civil cemetery was set up there. Then Shchekavitsa turns into Tatarka with its Muslim and Old Believer cemeteries. Nowadays the main Kiev mosque Ar-Rakhma is situated there. The settlers started to inhabit the mountain only in the XIX century, mostly on the slopes and from the side of Lukyanovka. In the 1930s, the cemetery was closed, the church was demolished, it was planned to build there a park (a common practice then), but something went wrong. After the war the hilltop was built up with apartment buildings of a remarkable for Kiev architecture (German prisoners worked there) and in 1951 on the church’s base they put a mast-«jammer» which is still used today for retransmission of radio communications of operational services and cell phones. In the 1970s, most of the private sector was evicted, and now the slopes of the mountain are slowly being built up. But while you can still find a wooden buildings of the early twentieth century in the street Olegovskaya (formerly Pogrebalnaya), and squats artists, and street Peaceful (the former Black Yar), on the which now generally have no single house, but still have a cobblestone paving…P. The tops of all Kiev «bald mountains» are considered geopathogenic zones. The frames of modern hikers do the most amazing tricks in these places. Of course, to believe or not to believe in bioenergetics — a personal matter for everyone, but in the past people’s attitude to such phenomena was much more serious. On Zamkova Mountain there was only a fortress and a cemetery, on Bald;— a fortress, and on Szczekawica — a cemetery. Moreover, the first two mountains are not inhabited until today, although they received the status of landscape parks only recently.

Bald Mountain in Kiev – a sacred site or a modern neo-cult?

Most of the researchers, one way or another, are familiar with the Bald Hill in Vydubychi, Kiev. As of today it is one of the most popular places in the city. Sorcerers of all traditions, ufologists and role-players honor it with their attention in search of “places of power”, underground passages, magical artifacts and so on.

It would be a mistake to point out the lack of interest in it on the part of scientists. Apparently, there is one too – latent, narrow-minded and “invisible”. Ecologists and archaeologists, historians and geologists are interested in the dense hill near the metro station not for a year or two.

Bald mountain is interesting to all, though, from different positions, systems of interests and even projected (desirable results). The coefficient of variation here is more than wide, because, obviously, the “urban shaman” with his eternal search for visions and “power” and, let us say, a cultural scientist do not have much in common.

In this case, we are not looking for truths or even answers to most questions. Our interlocutor today is the Kiev esotericist Eugene Polyakov, who at one time fruitfully cooperated with us during the writing of the brochure “Sacred Mountains of the Podneprovie.” Obviously, his position is only part of the complex image of Bald Mountain. Nevertheless, we can’t do without it – the Kiev tradition of deification of nature is not dead.

– Good day, Yevgeny. Some words about myself and my interests in mysticism and esoterics.

– I am a mystic and esoteric from the position of a person who studies different occult systems, systematizes them, and looks for the roots, the bases of shamanistic cultures, which are deeper, more ancient, more complex and larger. From this perspective I can be called a modern magician. I am not under the pressure of strict grimmuarial, bookish classics. I am interested in modern development because magic and life are words synonymous: life evolves and magic renews. Therefore, I am of today’s generation of magicians.

– Could you please tell me, briefly, the mystical part of the history of Bald Mountain?

– The history of Bald Mountain is common to all bald mountains, as such. The very notion of “bald mountain” refers to a mountain with a sprouse on top, where followers of certain, mostly pagan cults gathered to hold their feasts, fights, social affairs, in general.

These gatherings were often held by the higher priestly staff at sacred sites. By its energetic structure, the mountain was raised from within the earth by a stream of energy that poured outward. Just as the tectonic forces created the mountain in its time, so at the level of subtle energies their concentrations are placed on the top of the mountains. Therefore, people gathered on the tops of mountains, hills to join them. The history of Kiev Bald Mountain has its roots in the famous witches of Kiev in history. There have always been and are many bald mountains in Ukraine, but it is the Kiev mountain that is most famous because of its capital status.

Historically, it was central and northern Ukraine that was the most saturated with the so-called “places of power,” so the capital also marked the most significant of the bald mountains. Although, of course, we cannot claim that it is the most powerful in terms of energy. It is quite possible that the sacred hills of Volyn, certain mountains of the Carpathian region have more power. But they are further away, less accessible, and therefore less well known. Before the appearance of the Kiev witches, these were predominantly pagan, patriarchal cults. At certain intervals there were women’s cults, which were still run by men.

In any case, the priests of local cults, including nomadic tribes, gathered on the bald mountains. Thus, the cult we know as “Rodnovery” was formed. It, too, is syncretic in nature, with many deities who were not originally members of the same pantheon. Later it was they who were in charge of the Bald Mountains in the region. Originally, the Bald Mountain in Vydubychi was the Devich Mountain, as there were the Lada and Lelia temples on it. They were the first to settle on this mountain, and later, after the baptism, it was displaced by male cults, fugitives from Kiev. Here, as we know, the idol of Perun emerged, whence, in fact, the name (Vydubichi, ed.) of the area.

The women’s cult went in the direction of Kitaevo, it is impossible to say exactly where. Magi, regardless of gender and knowledge were exterminated. It is in the post-Vladimir period is the point from which the Bald Mountain in Vydubychi becomes the central object of worship.

– What is the Mountain for practitioners of certain teachings in Kiev (and beyond)? How high is its status?

– Currently, its status is very high, it is known outside Ukraine and among all the bald mountains. Everyone is drawn there. Not only esoterics. Also the cave now attracts all, they take tours there. Now it is, among other things, a tourist location. From mystical positions its status is high, it is a key element through which the knowledgeable are connected to the whole complex: Bald Hill – Busova Hill – Goloseevsky complex. At the level of these locations, Bald Mountain is the entry point to the complex, the gateway to it. The mountain acquired its current status 50-100 years ago. This includes its popularity and habitability, despite the fact that there are several bald mountains in Kiev, which are also used by mystics and simple pagans.

Undoubtedly, this is the clearest confirmation of the emerging neo-cult. Vydubitskaya and Zamkovaya mountains are the brightest examples of this. As for the neo-cults themselves, of course, they have always been and will always be eclectic, in all eras. The peculiarity of the modern, is a mixture of different traditions. If before it was a mixture of, for example, the cult of Svarog and Svarozhichi-Junior, now it is a mixture of different paganisms, in general, in the same cauldron. Very much like beef, fish and roots in the same pot. It may turn out delicious, it may not.

The younger generation doesn’t have a lot of knowledge of the Art, so you get a mixture like this. Most of the time people “play around”: the same Flying Macaroni God and so on. What matters is where your faith takes you. Here, the geography of the deity you worship is irrelevant.

– Are there any in the area similar to her in status or other characteristics?

– Within Kiev, the zone I have mentioned includes Zverinets (the lower part) on one side of the mountain; on the other (western) side it is Kitaevskaya Wasteland and Goloseevsky Forest, which do not have a pronounced relief. Nevertheless, even here the uninitiated often encounter certain sensations and images; on the south side stretches a ridge of slightly pronounced hills up to the Stone Grave (Melitopol, Zaporozhye region, ed.). Here it should be said that for many peoples the earth was a “skeleton of the dragon”, the highest archetype of the elements. It was believed that it was in the area of Ukraine the dragon makes another bend and its vertebrae as if forming these mountains.

The bald mountain, as a point, according to some representations, is a place where the dragon either flew out, or on the contrary, returned to its lair. Here we can think of the myths about the Currant River and the Serpent who guarded it. We have the Smorodinsky Descent, near which the river is said to have been. There, in fact, was a cascade of caves that led to an unknown direction. After a number of criminal episodes, they were simply buried. Within Kiev, you can not ignore the Castle Hill, on which pagans also erected the stone Alatyr; Desyatinna Hill with the Museum of Ukrainian History and the temple of Perun.

Also the so-called Chernaya Gora (Black Mountain), on the leveled site of which the Motherland and the BBB Museum are installed, is also a landmark in Kiev. This is the point where the “dark energies” used to flow, which were digested there and went into the Dnieper. After the mountain was leveled and an elongated upward monument erected, this energy began to spill out onto the surrounding expanses. To the north, as far as Chernigov, stretches a ridge of little-known hills, which also served certain sacred functions. The modern pagans still use them to this day. Each mountain has some kind of energy, respectively, knowing the specifics of this place, you can solve certain problems.

– What places can you single out as primeval, marked by the seal of the mysterious on the mountain?

– The first, of course, is the temple. In spite of its modernity and brief history, much has been invested in it. It is a key point on the mountain with a soft, positive potential. If you are there for a long time, most will feel its beneficial effects. You can also highlight the Witch’s Yar, which belongs to the Deadwood Grove. Witch’s Yar is the lowest point, on one side of it goes to the kapishte, on the other side – Dead Man’s Grove. So they kind of annihilate each other and create a closed system.

Strange as it may seem, the radio station on Bald Mountain performs a correlating function for the energies of this geolocation and has already become one of the key elements of its energy potential. On certain days, the radio tower registers huge energy variations and current losses. Near the radio station itself the effect of “chronal changes” is observed, when people simply fall out of time: its course is disturbed, the actions of devices and so on. People simply do not feel time. – Which ones do you think are of a long-standing nature, and which ones have appeared in the last 20-30 years?

– Probably the least that has changed since the formation of the mountain on it is Rusaliy Yar. In the old days, there was water flowing through it, and there is a lot of it even now. There at one time was brought the water of the Dnieper for military purposes. Then the water was discharged, however, a couple of years ago you could find a pier there. The area, which is the outpost of the mountain, its central square with a stone (so called “tomb of Bogrov,” Stolypin’s assassin, ed) has not undergone almost any changes either. Nevertheless, the ramparts around it are man-made.

The earliest sacral status has a place, was the ritual site of Lada and Lelja, not far from it is one of the “frontal places” of the mountain. The same is true of the old kapiska, which I believe was located not far from the modern one, most likely in the “Glade of Wishes”. The difference between them is only 100-200 meters. The “Glade” itself is one of the most vivid places where even a person without special knowledge can feel vivid emotions. It is also known to find 4-, 5- and even 6-leaf clovers here. – Is it possible to speak about the existence of a certain “neocult” – a system of urban legends, which had no analogues in the past, but successfully functioning now?

– Yes, we can, because each location of Bald Mountain is divided into zones that have their own legends. In any case, the entire Bald Mountain is some kind of plaid, consisting of a patchwork of different energies, manifestations, and stories. It is a single complex consisting of patches of different energies. In part this zoning is due to the neo-cult of particular places, “patches of the mountain. As for the old cults, it is likely that the authenticity of the ancient legends has suffered greatly. Surely there is something that goes back to the historical roots of a place, but it is nothing more than a foundation. All of the modern legends are from today (50-100 years old). One example is the cult of Vydubetsky Bald Mountain as the “belly of the earth”, the place where the energy meridians converge, is old, although one cannot say so. Nevertheless, we cannot say that it was the mountain that was Ouroboros, the serpent that bites its tail. All that is known is that it was somewhere in this region.

In the Soviet era, they say, geologists were looking for this “navel” using different methods, the same biolocation. If you look at the map of Kiev, it is dotted with energy knots, both on the right and left bank. At the level of the region, the cluster of nodes resonates in such a way that the Bald Mountain and Kitayvo are the central points. In addition, ammeters and other techniques demonstrate constant variations and lack of a constant field. – How organically have modern representations of the Mountain absorbed pre-existing images?

– There are no cults that have not taken root on the mountain because of that very diversity of energies. There are areas there that suit everyone from Buddhist monks to the most extreme Satanists. Nevertheless, there are so-called “fallout legends.” One of them says that somewhere between Bald Mountain and Goloseevo there is a pyramid-shaped city, the sacred prototype or original cause of this place. Then it was deliberately filled in. This is a little-known legend, which they either do not want to talk about or talk nonsense.

– By the way, the Bald Mountain is a “place of power” or the sum of them (explain, plz, what do you understand by them based on your ideas)?

– Vydubitskaya Bald Mountain is a single place of power. Simply, in view of its nodal structure, it gathers different energies. But its strength is that it is a single complex, like a human body. No place can be torn out of it and contrasted with others. To it as a single organism every seeker comes – not to a place, but to the mountain itself. Another thing is that a particular location on the mountain is more suited to this or that situation. But come to the “soul of the place,” not its parts. One comes to experience a state of temple through which a certain spirit passes. – What “energetic features” does this Bald Mountain have in terms of esotericism?

– It is a very powerful, fluid, life-giving energy. It is what comes from the grain when the sprout sprouts. This image can be correlated with the entire mountain, it is not for nothing that there was originally a female cult there. It is the place of the mother, the woman, the darkness. It is a creative place. In contrast to the Black Mountain, it is the navel, the cauldron, the belly, where the energy gathers.

– Are there similar analogues in Ukraine?

– In the Carpathians, but it seems to me that they are more narrowly focused – a particular mountain is responsible for one or two functions. There are a lot of mountains there and the potential is huge, but there is no concentrated energy there. They are scattered around the western regions, and the strongest places are in other countries, the same Transylvania. Of course, the height of the mountain is related to its potential, but not to its status. What you can get on Everest, you can get on Bald Mountain, the path will just be different. On Bald Mountain, you have to walk the same 8 kilometers, but on an internal road. In any case, where there are high mountains, there is often their own, additional mountain cult, most often these are the most inaccessible places, to go to which you can only get by means of some mystery, becoming akin to the more accessible mountains.

– What do you think its main, root secret is – an underground city, book artifacts, a witches’ coven? Maybe something else? – It is its knotty construction, which short-circuits the energies of the region, that gives the mountain its power. If the legends about the underground city are true, of course, it would have primacy. Perhaps it collects them, in which case, the mountain is simply an entrance to it.

– In general, who are those sabbaths, chanted by Orest Somov “Kiev witches”?

– A coven, as a concept, is a celebration of the end or beginning of a certain cycle. Solar, lunar, and others. Many cultures, in reference to these points, have and do celebrate these sabbaths on Bald Mountain. However, pop culture has done its part: this is what tourism lives on, holding some kind of mass action that goes back in time, like Kupala, for example. These are not sabbaths in the literal sense of the word; in this case, some parts are taken from the rituals and transformed into a cultural program, in order to make things more fun and interesting for people. Thanks to Somov, now Vlada Luzina, such people have created a modern cult of “coven,” where some things related to the cult of our ancestors happen. So even through festivals like this, we become involved with them. It is not uncommon for witches to gather on Bald Mountain and not be able to celebrate their holiday. Within reason, I am in favor of popularizing such rituals even in this “pop” way.

– Do scholars take an interest in it and, if so, how often and in what field?

– A few years ago I heard about attempts at scientific research on the mountain being suppressed. For some reason our government is either not interested or has its own structure that suppresses encroachments from outside. As of today, this topic is closed in Ukraine. In Russia it is just the opposite.

– What do you think is the difference between scientific and, for example, your own interest in Bald Mountain?

– I believe that, in fact, the scientific and esoteric parts of research should be combined because they are complementary. It is not enough to know the technical approach in order to get a complete picture. It is necessary to know and feel the cultural component of the place. What a shaman will feel is a sensory slice, an archeologist will see some burials, settlements, for instance, in this place. Combining esoteric and exoteric we get volumetric. The more diverse specialists can approach a problem, the more volumetric knowledge they will receive. On the one hand, I am in favor of studying the Bald Mountain matrix this way; on the other hand, it seems to me that emasculating knowledge about it from a scientific approach is dangerous because we may forget about the spiritual component of the process. It may be easier to leave unfinished legends and untold myths behind. I am in favor of exploring the mountain, but I am also in favor of keeping the secret secret.
