This is the airport of Bulgaria “Sunny Beach”. It bears this name because it is located near the popular tourist area of the same name in Bulgaria. It was opened in 1927.

It is the second largest passenger terminal complex in the country. It is oriented to serve charter flights and a few regular flights.

International airports in Bulgaria

The terminal is small but cozy. Inside there is everything a traveler might need on the road.

A cab or bus will easily take you to Burgas.

Operational Bulgarian airports

There are now eight air harbors open on the territory of the country. All airports in Bulgaria, except the capital, are relatively small in size, but despite this they serve both charter and scheduled flights to all destinations. A first-time tourist should understand that in small air harbors you often have to stand in long lines to get through passport control or to check your luggage. This process will go much faster if passengers follow the elementary rules, which can be found on the website of the Bulgarian air harbor.

All airports in Bulgaria are quite small, except for Sofia Terminal 2. So be prepared for possible congestion at the airport. But there are some nice things. For example, the open waiting room at Burgas airport in the summertime. Over a cup of coffee and watching airliners take off, the waiting time flies unnoticed.

By the way, in the ranking of the influential consulting company Skytrax among the airports in Eastern Europe, three Bulgarian airports: Sofia, Varna, Burgas received respectively 8th, 9th, 10th place and the number of stars respectively four, three (like Plovdiv) and two (data for 2014).

International airports.

Of the current air berths, only 4 have been assigned “international” status. International airports in Bulgaria:

  1. Sofia Capital Airport.
  2. Burgas.
  3. Varna.
  4. Plovdiv.

The above-mentioned major air gates serve Russian tourists and provide passengers with a full range of services. Which of them to choose? It all depends on where you want to go in the country. For example:

  • to get to the Black Sea coast, in the summer holiday season, it is most convenient from the air gate Burgas;
  • Choosing the most famous resort Golden Sands, it is most convenient to land in Varna;
  • to get to the capital is easiest from the airport Sophia;
  • and the famous resorts of Pamporovo and Borovets are easiest to reach from the airport in Plovdiv.

Geographically the location of the main air gateway in the country is very convenient and advantageous. On the map the four points of these cities form a slightly irregular trapezoid with the corners in the form of airports, so Bulgaria is as if divided into unequal sectors, which include the resort areas of the Black Sea coast and the central part of the country.

Accordingly, closer to the resorts are the eastern airports of Bourgas and Varna, between which the distance is more than a hundred kilometers. To the central part belongs Plovdiv, which almost corresponds to the geographical center of the country, to Varna and Burgas respectively 296 and 417 kilometers. To Sofia and its main airport, the westernmost and largest, another 147 kilometers.

Main airport in Bulgaria

The main air gate of Bulgaria is called by the locals “Sofia air gate”. The airport was built in the last century in the early 30s. Since the flow of tourists to Bulgaria is constantly growing, the air gate several times reconstructed, and in 2006 was put into operation a new terminal. Currently, Sofia airport serves about 4 million passengers a year. There are 4 terminals on the territory of the air harbor:

  1. Terminal 1 is often referred to as the “old airport” because it is housed in the old block of the air hub. The terminal serves both budget and charter flights.
  2. Terminal 2, began its operation in late 2006. During the year through the terminal passes about 2.5 million passengers.
  3. Terminal № 3 is a VIP-block, it has a separate entrance for VIP-passengers, there are four comfortable rooms for rest. This module is located in the western part of the terminal.
  4. Terminal 4 is used for the governmental flights, which serve the President and his entourage arriving and departing from Bulgaria. The terminal is called the government terminal.
