The Island of Burano (Burano) – the island quarter of Venice with colorful houses, Italy
Burano is an island quarter in Venice (Italy) located 7 km away from the city center, near Torcello, with a population of approx. It is known for its brightly colored and varied skyline. Known for its brightly colored houses. Since the 16th century it has specialized in lacemaking. The lacemaking technology is thought to have been exported by the Venetians from the Eastern Mediterranean. Burano was a native of the famous composer Galuppi. Until 1923, Burano was considered a separate town from Venice, just like Murano. In addition to the colorful buildings, tourists are attracted to Burano museum of Venetian lace and the church of San Martino with sloping 52-meter Campanile.
You can get there by boat, which plays the role of the public transport in Venice. This boat in the old tradition is called “steamboat”, “vaporetto. Boats make regular trips to the Venetian islands of Murano, Burano, Torcello and San Michele.
Going there and returning back, you can see the city exactly as it was once seen by Venetian merchants and sailors, going to distant countries and returning home. Second, the boats come to Burano about once an hour. That’s enough time to wander leisurely around the island, marveling and taking pictures. So to speak, taking your time to drink coffee after a hearty Venetian lunch. By the way, you can eat here and buy souvenirs.
The main attraction in Burano is that all the houses here are painted each in its own color. This bright and unique range surprises even in a dark day, and even in the bright sun the town literally overflows with all colors. I will not say “all the colors of the rainbow,” because there are much more colors in the Burana palette. About this amazing variety of colors, they tell a joke that for the first time the residents of Burano painted their houses so that drunken men, coming back from the pub, could find their native dwelling. Those who were in the habit of drinking themselves intoxicated on their way to the drinking establishment painted their foreheads the color of their homes, and then they were unmistakably sent home. This is probably an anecdote. On Burano, however, the color is officially assigned to the house, and one can change this color only with the permission of the local government.
In addition to colorful houses, the island of Burano is famous for its craft, lacemaking. The Venetians took over the art of weaving fine lace with a fine needle from Crete, which they controlled for a long time. Venetian lace, which was knitted by women from Burano, competed with the famous lace from Bruges. The trade almost disappeared in the 19th century, and an attempt was made to recreate it in the 20th century. But without success. Venetian women were no longer willing to engage in this art, time-consuming and poorly paid. The production has safely departed to South-East Asia. Know about it, buying souvenirs in Burano, but don’t be too strict. Still, the lace is made according to the local ancient models, and yet it is beautiful. And thanks to the international division of labor, they are also cheap enough for the visiting tourist to have the joy of buying a beautiful souvenir.

An island from a children’s fairy tale, with lots of colorful houses-cubes
Hello again, everyone. I love Venice, have been there several times as part of tour groups. Who has been in such tours, knows that the introduction to the city is usually limited to a visit to St. Mark’s Square with everyone.
Away from bustling Venice
While in Venice, you can’t miss the opportunity to visit this small island of Burano. It can be reached by water, of course, in less than an hour. Here you are away from the hustle and bustle of Venice. Everything is much calmer. For me.
The houses reminded me of children’s cartoons.
Greetings readers of Otzovik! Remembering last year’s spring visit to the glittering Venice, I found photos of the island of Burano and want to share them with you. We arrived to the island by the most public transport of Venice – vaporetto (water streetcar) from the island of Murano, which is located on the island of Burano.
To become the heroine of a fairy tale
I have seen many pictures of this island, but somehow I felt sorry for the time to come here, once in Venice. However, I thought I would have to visit it myself to form my own impression of it.
An island of colorful houses and canals. It’s a vivid fairy tale.

Greetings everyone! There probably isn’t a person in the world who hasn’t heard of Venice, and I, going to Italy, specifically chose a resort from which I could get to the city fairly quickly on my own. But personally.
To go to Venice and not visit Burano? I think it’s a crime. From Venice, you can take a ferry in less than an hour. The cost in 2016 was about 25 euros per person. That’s there and back.

Picturesque, fun, sociable locals, something to see. Of all the islands, it is the best to visit.
Burano is 7 kilometers from Venice, consists of four islands connected by bridges and is famous for 1) colored houses, 2) lace and 3) the leaning bell tower of the local church. Actually, the tilted campanile of the church of San Martino is the local “tower of Pisa.”
Somewhere there is a fairy tale. and one wants to go back to childhood!
When we sailed to the island of Burano, we had the feeling that we were in some kind of fairy tale. The island is built up with small low-rise old houses, which are painted, as if in a child’s picture, in bright colors. The weather was.
