Cinque Terre, a nature reserve that is located in the Liguria region of Italy, is an excellent choice for a day trip for any tourist who has come to experience this wonderful country. About Cinque Terre, even before my trip, I was excited.
A cruise day in La Spezia!
Having started my cruise reviews from the port in Savona , I missed our first stop in La Spezia. And now it’s time to write how we spent the day. January 3 at 8:30 our liner.
Everything seemed brighter in the pictures.
Initially I wondered – to go or not to go? To sail or not to sail? I read the most contradictory opinions on the Internet. Some were delighted, others responded neutrally. Again, judging by the photos – some were just.
Cinque Terre: the sunny land of Liguria
What is Cinque Terre? Translated, the phrase means the Five Lands. Five towns and five communes make up the territory of the national park. The towns are scattered in a few minutes from each other, their names delight your ears with their melodious.
One of the most unusual places in Italy with old castles, ancient structures and beautiful scenery.

Adventures (nice and not so nice) on a hot autumn day
Now that all international routes are closed, more and more often think of various trips and excursions, pleasant and not so pleasant. About Cinque Terre I have a double impression. On the one hand, this national park is insanely beautiful and scenic.
But not in summer!
We read the reviews on the internet and decided to look at the heritage of Unesco. In the heat. We rented an apartment in La Spezia for two days with the intention of walking the trails between the cities. Decided to buy a day ticket and get around by train.
The Five Lands of Italy.
After a lazy day in Razzo , we get up early the next day. The goal is Cinque Terre – the five lands of Italy. Today we will travel by train. By car, and our car, to go there is a waste of time.
It is an amazing place! Memories of a lifetime!
In Italy there is a wonderful place – the Cinque Terre National Park (Cinque Terre), translated from the Italian word for five lands. Once I saw these beautiful views in the photos, I knew we just had to go there.
My recommendations for Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre (or the five lands) is one of the most beautiful places in Italy! The five lands are the tiny towns of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, located one after another along the coast. There is a lot of information on the Internet about.
It’s a stunningly beautiful place!
I love to travel, and I try to do it more often. And I have already seen many beautiful and interesting places. But there were not so many places that just stunned me with their beauty and remained a vivid memory for many years.
For lovers of woods and small places
Cinquefe means “five” in Italian. The National Park, protected by UNESCO, includes five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Monorola and Riomaggiore in Liguria. All villages are very small, authentic and located on the mountains with access to the sea.
I want to go back there!
Cinque Terre is located along the Ligurian coast and includes 5 towns: Corniglia, Monterosso al Mare, Riomaggiore, Vernazza and Manarola. The very name Cinque Terre translates as “Five Lands”. I was there in August 2018.
It’s beautiful, clean, delightful.
We lived in La Spezia and set aside two days to visit Cinque Terre. On the first day we visited two villages. Because we decided to walk on foot. I regretted it, because it was a long walk on the mountain paths.
The beauty is over the heads of tourists.
I had been dreaming about Cinque Terre ever since I accidentally came across a photo on the internet of a colorful town clinging to the rocks. And here’s luck – we fly into Pisa, and from there it’s only a short drive to the national park.

A piece of paradise on earth.
While in Italy, we were lucky to visit Cinque Terre. The name means “5 Lands” in Italian. The territory of the national park unites five small settlements located in Liguria. These are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, Corniglia and.
Cinque Terre – National Park of Italy
Cinque Terre is beautifully situated in Liguria, and thanks to its unique sea, mountains and medieval landscape, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year the protected area of Cinque Terre attracts many tourists from all over the world who would do anything to spend a single day in Cinque Terre.
The National Park of Cinque Terre stretches a few kilometers along the rocky Ligurian coast and includes 5 picturesque cities: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare with a total population of about 4,000 people. Each year, these towns take honorable places in the lists of the best places to stay in Liguria.
Cinque Terre – Five Lands.
Here are a few pictures and videos of Cinque Terre .
Cities of Cinque Terre
And so, as I said above, Cinque Terre unites five small villages, and the name, which translates from Italian as “Five Lands”, even says it all.
Each of the five towns is located in close proximity to the sea, or to be more precise, on the coastal cliffs. That is why hiking in this area is very popular, what better way to get acquainted with the local nature.
Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso al Mare, one of the most visited and largest on the coast, is divided into two parts – the old and new town, they are connected to each other by a short tunnel. The main feature is a large sandy beach, which in high season becomes a fee.
Despite its small size, the city is roomy enough, and has an impressive number of hotels and hotels to accommodate tourists as well as plenty of restaurants, cafes and stores for shopping. Fishing is still well-developed here.
The most famous attraction is the Aurora Tower (16th century). And if you decide to visit the beach in a new city you will definitely come across a sculpture of impressive size depicting the mythological character – Neptune. Do not miss the opportunity to walk through the winding streets of the historic center and see the ancient church of San Giovanni Battista.
Vernazza is the most unusual and beautiful town of Cinque Terre as part of it is built on the rock itself with a wonderful view to the sea. Another part of it flows smoothly to the seashore. Here, at the very edge of the rock are the main attractions of Vernazza – two ancient defensive towers, although there are many such structures in the whole town.
The town itself looks like a labyrinth of narrow streets, some of which may seem a bit worn.
Compared to Monterosso, the beaches here are not large and the bathing spots are quite limited. But there are other attractions in the harbor in the form of restaurants, cafes and bars, which are also found in the beautiful central square. Do not miss the opportunity to take a boat trip, namely to see the port of Vernazza from the sea.
Corniglia is the smallest of the cities of Cinque Terre, but it is situated on the highest point above sea level (of the five). From the one hundred meters high hill on which Corniglia stands you can enjoy a wonderful view to the sea, surroundings and other cities of Cinque Terre. Unlike Vernazza and other cities in Cinque Terre, there is no port in Corniglia and it is difficult to reach it by car, so you have two options – to take the train or to walk.
If you are a lightweight then, from the train station into town you can walk up the walkway, tourists with large luggage is better to wait for the bus, which runs from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm (at weekends from 8:00). One of the most memorable local attractions is the Cathedral of St. Peter in the Gothic style and the Chapel of St. Catherine. From there you can visit the Spiaggione Pebble Beach which is known for its crystal clear waters.
Manarola can be called the most photographed town, it has everything for this: colorful houses, a harbor full of boats and olive groves and vineyards. On the waterfront there are the best restaurants where you can taste the traditional dishes of the region, and bars which are famous for good Italian coffee.
The coastline is known for its many caves and underwater rocks that will be appreciated by divers. The path between Manarola and Riomaggiore is called the Trail of Love, it is one of the most beautiful trails for hiking and at the same time the easiest physically, but at the moment it is closed due to the threat of landslides. The top of the town is crowned by the church of St. Lorenzo (14th century). The local beaches with very panoramic views, will not leave indifferent even the most demanding tourist.
Riomaggiore is the most southerly of the Five Lands. Here you can find a well-preserved medieval fortress, which is the architectural heritage of the region and the whole Italy, also do not forget to visit the local botanical garden.
On the main street of Via Colombo you will find many cafes, bars, souvenir stores, and grocery stores. Special mention should be made of the local restaurants where you can try the famous spaghetti with mussels. The pier of Riomaggiore is quite large, and from the sea there is a beautiful view of the unusual, but peculiar to local cities, tiered houses. Especially attractive are the castle on the top of Cerrico hill and the beautiful church of St. Giovanni Battista.
The trails of Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre Trails are a well known way to spend time in the area. The trails are a series of hiking routes connecting all five towns: Riomaggiore – Manarola – Corniglia – Vernazza – Monterosso al Mare. The coastal trails are more popular with tourists than the inland trails because of the rocky sea scenery. The main criterion for hiking is of course good weather, and it is definitely worth bringing a pair of comfortable shoes and suitable clothing.
The coastal paths (all the way from Riomaggiore to Monterosso), which take around 5 hours on foot from one end to the other, are considered to be easier than the sacred routes (visiting local churches).
The coastal trail is called the blue trail (“Il sentiero azzurro”) and is not very difficult. Walking on some of the trails is paid, so you have to buy a special card – “Cinque Terre Card”, with its help travelers will be able to freely explore all the mountain paths and attractions.
