How to get from Rome Fiumicino Airport

Rome Fiumicino airport: how to get to Rome

The largest airport in Rome, named after the great Italian Leonardo da Vinci, is located in the city of Fiumicino (L’aeroporto di Roma-Fiumicino) . This is about 35 km from the Italian capital. It is here where the airline company Alitalia is based.

Founded in 1961, the airport Fiumicino replaced the existing airport Ciampino.

The main airlines are served here, while Aeroporto di Roma-Ciampino takes the role of hosting private companies and low-cost airlines.

You can find current information on flights, as well as buy a ticket at a bargain price on the Aviasales.ru website.

Currently, the airport has four terminals, between which shuttle buses operate. The first flight is between T1-T2-T3 and the second is between T3-T5. It is also possible to walk from one terminal to another by following the signs.

The buses between terminals are free. If you arrive at Fiumicino between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., remember to call the shuttle yourself using the special button at the stop.

The terminals are divided by the flights served as follows:

  • T1 – designed for flights within Italy and flights within the Schengen area (Alitalia, AirFrance, KLM and others).
  • T2 – serves charter flights and low-cost airlines Wizzair, EasyJet and others.
  • T3 – is the main international terminal, receiving aircraft of long-distance destinations.
  • T5 – is used for flights to the U.S., Israel and Asia.

At the airport you can arrange the tax-free baggage. To do this at customs do not forget to certify the forms you received upon purchase in stores. These forms with receipts must be presented at the Global Blue Tax Refund office in terminals T3 and T5.

By renting a car from the airport

You can rent a car directly at Rome airport. All the major international rental companies are represented here: Hertz, Avis, Europcar, etc., as well as Italian rental companies such as SicilybyCar. However, I book a car 1-2 months in advance with Rentalcars:

The rental car locations are located in Office Tower 2, easily accessible by the pedestrian tunnels that connect the terminal buildings to the multi-level parking lot. Signs in the car rental area are in the arrivals area.

Car returns are as follows: cars are returned to the same area where they were rented (Buildings A, B or C of the multilevel parking lot). When approaching the airport, follow the road signs on the Rome-Fiumicino freeway.

By car to Rome airport

Leonardo da Vinci Airport is 32 Km from Rome and easily accessible by car from the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) and then from the A91 (Rome-Fiumicino). Then follow the signs to get to a specific terminal.

From Civitavecchia, take the freeway to Rome, after leaving the tollbooth follow the signs to the airport.

Parking at the airport

If you arrive at the airport in a rented car, you must leave the car in a special parking lot. Follow the signs for Car rent or look for a sign with the name of your rental company.

Also remember to fill the car up to a full tank before you return it. The address of a gas station near the airport:

Carsharing

This mode of transportation is gaining universal popularity around the world. And Fiumicino Airport is no exception. You can take your car directly from the top floor of the short-stay parking lot in Terminal 1.

To do this you need to download the Enjoy or Car2go app to your smartphone and book the desired car. Usually you can take the following cars: Fiat 500 in Enjoy and Smart Fortwo in Сar2go.

Getting in and out of the parking lot of Terminal 1 is done by reading the license plates of the carshare cars. You do not need to pay anything.

TAX FREE at Fiumicino airport

The customs office is located in the check-in area of Terminal 3: there you have to show your purchases, receipts, and get a customs stamp. Then go to the VAT refund signs (area H).

The offices of the company paying the tax on your purchases are located at:

  • Global Blue Terminal 3, boarding area, check-in counter 326,
  • Global Blue Terminal 3, departure area “E” – after the passport control

At Fiumicino Airport (Terminal 3) you can obtain an electronic customs stamp through the OTELLO system at the Global Blue office. To obtain it, you must show the Global Blue staff the goods purchased, your passport and the plane ticket (boarding pass).
