The Thousand Islands National Park, located on the territory of two states at once, is an area of 2,000 square kilometers of simply indescribable beauty. These are 1,864 islands, scattered in a chaotic order in the middle of the great St. Lawrence River, with different sizes: some have real highways, and some cannot fit more than two trees. But each of them has its own history and even a mystery, about which the guides are happy to tell, because this is the most favorite place for fans of green tourism, which is protected by UNESCO and is included in the list of unique phenomena of the biosphere.

The Thousand Islands archipelago consists of 1,864 islands (Canada, USA).

This unique natural formation “Thousand Islands” (Thousand Islands) stretching for 80 km. along the borders of two North American states (Canada and USA) on the great St. Lawrence River is the most beautiful place on the planet and deserves special attention.

Looking at this magnificence from a bird’s-eye view, it’s amazing how it is possible. Not only are these very picturesque places, but they are also almost all inhabited, the exceptions are the islands, which have a very tiny area.

According to the rules and criteria defined in the region, an island is a piece of land, which for 365 days a year is surrounded by water, and it must have at least one tree. Thus, the archipelago, which is called the Thousand Islands, consists of 1,864 islands.

Tour guides tell with great fervor about the local legend, which supposedly explains such a picturesque riot of nature in the middle of the river. It says that in ancient times, when the gods could show their mercy or severely punish people for disobedience or persistent strife, such an event occurred not far from these places.

The Thousand Islands Archipelago is 80 kilometers long and runs through Canada and the United States.

When one of their supreme rulers of destiny grew weary of the feuds and wars of men, he gave them his most beautiful garden. Of course, for a time the people subsided and rejoiced, but when the euphoria passed, discord and quarrels began again. Then the angry god simply took away the gifted garden and when he flew past these places, he simply dropped it, and it, scattered into many beautiful pieces, and remained in the middle of the river. That’s why such beautiful scatterings of picturesque islands have been called the “Garden of God” since antiquity.

But in fact, the origin of the archipelago is more prosaic and ordinary for Mother Nature. This area is part of the high above sea level Canadian crystalline shield, which has been washed by the fast flowing waters of a melting glacier for thousands of years. And over several millennia, the water simply eroded away the solid rock, forming a shallow hilly surface, filling with its flow all the lowlands that were formed. Over time, the peaks were covered with lush vegetation, turning into a beautiful picturesque archipelago.

This explains the different size of the islands and their remoteness from each other. Naturally, these places were the cause of constant disagreements and quarrels between the two countries, but by the middle of the XIX century the parties came to an agreement and now two-thirds of the archipelago area belongs to Canada, and the rest – the United States.

And as soon as the States agreed, these islands began to buy up en masse, building beautiful villas, small houses, secret residences and even palaces. And their owners could become not only the inhabitants of these countries, but also Europeans, and in general, all comers. In fact, at first, even large tracts of land in the midst of the raging waters of the St. Lawrence River could be purchased for a few hundred dollars, and even tiny ones for mere pennies.

By the way, many people think that it is the place where all the conspiracy threads, which are woven for hundreds of years, come from.

Such rumors are fueled by the fact that there is no access to the territory of the residence and it is strictly forbidden even to approach the island. Aerial photography confirms that in the depths of the island are the ruins of ancient buildings and there are even tennis courts, which have already completely “captured” the nature in the form of wild plants. Eyewitnesses say that visitors sometimes come here, and the rest of the time it is under the indefatigable protection of the U.S. border service.

The first thing they built on the island was a watchtower, a power plant, and many auxiliary buildings, and when work on the huge castle was in full swing, Boldt stopped construction and forgot about it forever. It was at this time that his beloved wife died of an unknown illness. Therefore, from 1904 to 1970 the unfinished palace was abandoned until the authorities bought it. At the moment the castle is fully restored and completed and there is an amazing museum, but it can get only those who have open U.S. visa, because right on the pier is a border checkpoint.

The only thing the experts warn Novate.Ru, if you decide to take pictures or shoot video of the beautiful islands, consider the strongest gusts of wind, which stroll on the open areas of the tower and deliver a lot of unpleasant moments to the gaping visitors.
