Basel art museum

The Basel Museum of Art is a world-renowned museum of fine art. Its collection, the “Basel Public Art Collection,” has about 4,000 paintings, sculptures, installations and videos, as well as 300,000 drawings and prints from seven centuries, making it the largest public art collection in Switzerland. The museum is located next to the former Swiss National Bank building in Basel.

The neoclassical museum building was planned and realized from 1931 to 1936 by Paul Bonatz and Rudolf Christ. The new building for the museum’s expansion was opened in 2016.

The Basel Museum of Art, with its so-called “Amerbach Cabinet” acquired by the city in 1661, is considered one of the oldest publicly accessible art museums in the world.

The Art Museum of Basel houses the largest collection of works by the Holbein family. The museum’s older holdings date back to Basel collector Basilius Amerbach (1533-1591), whose father Boniface was a friend of the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam and the painter Hans Holbein. In 1661 the city acquired a private collection. The so-called “Cabinet of Amerbach” was one of the first museums owned by the municipal community.

The main building of the art museum is divided into three floors. Works by Holbein, Conrad Witz, Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Matthias Grunewald, Rubens and Rembrandt are displayed here. The museum has a large collection of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings. The 19th century Impressionists are represented by Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In addition, you can see works of German, Austrian and Swiss painting of the 18th and 19th centuries in the museum.

The sculpture and painting exhibits of the 20th century include works by Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris, for example. Expressionism is represented by Edvard Munch, Franz Marc, Oscar Kokoschka and Emile Nolde. There are also works of art from the days of Constructivism, Dadaism and Surrealism.

Contemporary art is exhibited together with works by the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation in the Basel Museum of Modern Art, which was opened in 1980 and is administratively part of the Musée d’Art.

A separate section of the building houses the Cabinet of Prints and Drawings, which houses a rich collection of drawings and original prints from the 15th century to the present day. With more than 300,000 hand drawings, watercolors, and prints, it is the largest public collection in Switzerland, and one of the most important collections of its kind in the world. In addition to the drawings by Albrecht Dürer in five albums, there are also 50 drawings by Paul Cézanne.

The museum also has a public library for specialists, which is also the library of the cultural-historical seminary of the University of Basel. The library has been located since January 2005 in the nearby former National Bank building, built in the Italian Renaissance style.

From April to September 2009, the Art Museum of Basel displayed 70 landscape paintings by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. In chronological order, the exhibition provided an overview of all periods of his artistic career. The exhibition was complemented by 40 paintings of his contemporaries. It was visited by more than half a million people.
