Greenland Ice Canyon

Many people think of Greenland imagining a barren frozen wasteland. In fact, this is a big misconception. Gorgeous winter wonderland can surprise even the most demanding travelers. Did you know that the Greenland Ice Sheet covers about 80% of the country’s surface and stretches 2,400 km from north to south, and at its widest point is 1,100 km? It contains approximately 10% of the world’s ice and is the second largest ice mass in the world after the Antarctic Ice Sheet . Greenland’s glacial glory has made this northern island one of the places worth visiting.

The ice sheet is lowering toward the coast. In recent years, the ice cap of Greenland, this veritable kingdom of ice, is no longer as stable due to warming. Numerous canyons are forming in the central part of the island. It seems that nature, like the most talented artist on this planet, draws with her brush intricate, sometimes even surrealistic pictures.

The most famous and chilling canyon fascinates with the blue of its waters and magnificent arches, woven of ice and looming menacingly over anyone who dares to approach the mystery of the largest island of the planet. Grand Ice Canyon Greenland is 45 meters deep. Just imagine a block of ice nine stories high! The bottomless abyss and the endless ice create a romantic landscape which fascinates with its snowy stillness.

The history of this place says it was once completely covered in snow. The stunning Canyon was carved by meltwater and is one of the most recognizable places in the country. Nature here has not been so affected by human activity. Beautiful beaches, huge glaciers that give birth to ice towns – the area is very beautiful and picturesque. In fact, Greenland’s Ice Canyon is one of the most photographed places on earth.

Along the edge of the Canyon you can see lines that show the layers of ice and snow that have formed over the years. Its bottom is not soil or rocks at all. The dark deposits at the bottom of this river are cryoconite, a dusty material formed by weathering. It is deposited on snow, glaciers and ice caps. Between the sheer white walls of ice at the bottom of Ice Canyon deep water contrasts with the amazing blue. The canyon curves intricately, the blue river winds like a snake between the sparkling white ice.

On the banks of the Canyon live: the reindeer, polar bear, polar wolf, lemming, arctic fox, etc., and in the coastal waters the walrus, harp seal, bowhead whale, etc., totally about 30 species of mammals. Flocks of gulls, grouse and eiders fly over the white expanse of eternal ice, enlivening the icy silence with at least some sounds.

The ice canyon is only a small part of the beauty of this country. Greenland is rich with many beautiful icebergs, magnificent mountains, remarkable fjords, ice and a variety of flora and fauna not found anywhere else in the world.

Another attraction is the Blue River or Petermann, the largest floating glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. The glacier that gives rise to this river is located in Northwest Greenland and forms icebergs and connects the Greenland ice sheet to the Arctic Ocean. The floating ice tongue is 15 km wide and 70 km long, varying in thickness from about 600 m at the base to 30 – 80 m at the edges. During the summer, the ice melts, causing a small stream flow, which eventually merges into larger streams, and those eventually become rivers. The water has an amazing dark aquamarine color. The bright blue color was formed from glacial silt. The Blue River was discovered by three scientists who were conducting research on global warming. Since then, it has attracted a large number of tourists for its magnificence. The breathtaking landscape of white ice with blue rivers and small black patches formed by atmospheric soot can’t help but fascinate. Narrow or wide, they flow in curves, like a magical river on a fairy-tale Earth.

The era of great geographic discovery continues! NASA’s Ice Bridge scientific project has discovered a gigantic canyon hidden under 1.5 km of ice in Greenland. Its length is more than 750 km – more than the length of the famous Grand Canyon.

With the help of radar imaging data, scientists were able to make a detailed map of the topography of Greenland. It turned out that the canyon stretches from the center of the island to the Petermann Glacier, overlooking the Arctic Ocean. However, the depth of this huge “pothole”, in contrast to the length, is not too big: no more than 800 meters.

Probably 4 000 000 years ago, the canyon was a valley of a large river through which water from the island flowed into the ocean. Then the Greenland area was covered by an ice sheet, and the canyon was hidden from the attention of explorers until the advent of modern technology. “You would think that the landscape of the Earth has been thoroughly studied, and everything that can be mapped,” says Jonathan Bamber, lead author of the study. – But the canyon in Greenland proves that there are still many white spots on the planet.

Greenpeace expedition found that in the near future, the glacier will lose up to 100 km² of ice. That’s enough water to supply a city such as Sydney, whose population was estimated to be about 4.28 million in 2006, for 10 years.

A tourist attraction

This truly amazing island is a magnet for travelers and researchers from around the world. For the sake of such beauty hundreds of people come to this wild, inhospitable land. The most popular among tourists, who have made a far-expensive flight to Greenland, is the Ice Canyon. Greenland’s glaciers are so desolate that polar bears, wolves and reindeer feel at ease here, which are not afraid of people. Smaller inhabitants of the island – Arctic foxes and lemmings – also look at the tourists with interest and consider this territory their fiefdom.

Danger for tourists and the ice itself. However, such fears do not stop extreme explorers, who want to get a close look at the creation of nature. Fantastic photos taken against the background of the Ice Canyon become a worthy reward for bravery and determination of daredevils.

Greenland’s Ice Canyon is a cold but alluring world landmark. The icy river carries cold and surprisingly clear water from ancient glaciers straight into the arms of the ocean, forming on its way fantastic canyons, which could be the envy of the legendary Arizona Wave.

Greenland is the largest island on our planet, most of which lies above the Arctic Circle. It is officially part of Denmark and is its autonomous unit. More than 80% of the island is covered by snow and ice. It is true that recently, mankind has actively taken up the destruction of its home, and as a consequence, the average temperature on Earth is rising. Because of the warming (I don’t know if it’s Global or Local), the Greenland ice sheet began to melt. The meltwater, heading towards the ocean, makes unbelievably beautiful channels in the ice. Many amazing rivers form in the ice cover, but the most fascinating is Ice Canyon.

  • geographic coordinates makes no sense to write the geographic coordinates, as the channel can change. It is said that the canyon is located right in the heart of Greenland, and you can only get to it by dog sledding. To be honest, I have not been able to find coordinates and look at Ice Canyon from space. If you have them – share
  • The nearest town and the capital of Greenland is Nook, where the trip to the Canyon begins.
  • the depth of the canyon at times up to 40 meters (and it is the height of a 12-story building)
