Kuang Si Falls
Kuang Si Falls is a beautiful waterfall on many levels, the most beautiful in Laos and one of the most beautiful in all of Southeast Asia. Several cascades on different levels formed pools in which you can swim. Some of the pools are marked “No Swimming” because they are dangerous. If you want, you can climb to the top of the waterfall on an easy path and stairs. From there you have a view of the surrounding area, but the waterfall itself is poorly visible.
Near the waterfall is organized infrastructure to stay here at least all day: souvenir market, cafes and restaurants, parking. Also on the territory there is a mini-zoo of Himalayan bears, or rather, the center of their rescue. If time permits, it is really worth it to come here for a whole day for a picnic, to swim in the pools, to wander through the jungle. All in all, this place is a must-see from Luang Prabang.

Quang Si Falls near Luang Prabang – a must see in Laos! Testimonial, photo, video
The very beautiful Kuang Si waterfall (Kuang Si) is near the city of Luang Prabang in northern Laos. When I, sitting in our cozy apartment in Chiang Mai, was planning my winter trip to Laos, to tell you the truth, I thought about excluding Luang Prabang from my itinerary. It was too much mixed reviews about the city, and to get there is not so easy: or two days by boat along the Mekong from Huaysai or by bus through Vientiane But: after seeing pictures of the waterfall Quang Si, I decided that this waterfall for me a must see in Laos and left Luang Prabang in our itinerary. I must say that Luang Prabang of all the places we liked the most! And here is praised by many Vang Vieng did not fall into our hearts, we did not understand this second “Pai” I did not understand the second “Pai”.

Quang Si Falls: where is it and how to get there
Quang Si Falls is located in Tat Kuang Si Park, 30 km from Luang Prabang (exact coordinates of the park on the map at the bottom of the article).
Entrance to Kuang Si Park
You can get to the waterfall in one of the following ways:
Renting a bike in Luang Prabang is still not cheap, but every year there are more and more bike rentals and prices are getting lower. Right now, you can rent a bike with an automatic transmission in Luang Prabang for 120,000 kip (~ 15 dollars ) + a couple of dollars for gas. The road is fine almost all the way to the waterfall, only the last small section is dirt. We wanted to go to the waterfall this way, even went to rent a bike, but we saw another, more attractive offer how to get to Quang Si Waterfall.
The thing is that on that day it was very cold in Luang Prabang, and Lesha got a little sick after the boat trip to the Mekong. Warm clothes we had almost nothing, we wore everything we could As I imagined that the ride on a bike for an hour in the cold wind, then I did not want to go to the waterfall, and I wanted to a warm coffee house with delicious cakes The minivan and the cakes were really nice.
In a minivan
So, at the place where we wanted to rent a bike, I saw an offer to take a minivan to the waterfall for only 45,000 kip (~ 5.5 dollars ) per person round trip. The minivan waits 3 hours for the tourists at the waterfall and takes them directly back to the hotel. I made a quick decision: I send Lesha home to the hotel for treatment, and I myself go to the waterfall in a warm minibus The minivan to the waterfall.
Minivans to Quang Si Falls from different tour companies go several times a day. I saw minivans to the waterfall at 11:00, 12:00 and 1:00 pm. There may be a flight even later. I left at 12:00. When the minibus came to the office of the tour company, there were already sitting tourists (ten people in total), so we took only me and immediately went towards the waterfall. We rode for 40 minutes and sitting in the warmth, I was glad that I chose this way to get to Quang Xi Falls.
By Tuk Tuk
The tuk-tuk in Luang Prabang is different from the tuk-tuk in Bangkok, it looks like the songhteo in Chiang Mai and Samui. A tuk-tuk ride from Luang Prabang to the waterfall and back will cost 150,000 – 200,000 kip (~18-25 dollars ) for the whole tuk-tuk. If there is a small group of at least 4 people, it will be cheap to ride a tuk-tuk But: the tuk-tuk is open and in winter, in the cold, it is very cold and windy! I passed by a lot of tuk-tuks sitting in a warm minibus, watching the freezing European tourists, who were shivering with cold and wrapped in a thin stole. Well, no one expected it to be so cold in Laos in winter!
This is what the tuk-tuk in Luang Prabang looks like.

Bears at Tat Kuang Si Park
Before I talk in detail about the waterfall itself, which in my rating of waterfalls is almost on the first place, on the same step with Agua Azul Falls in Mexico and waterfalls in Plitvice Lakes Park in Croatia, I can’t help but say a few words about the bears living in the park
Bears in the park
On the way to the waterfall, almost right next to the park entrance, there are black Asian bears living in the park! As it turns out, there is a bear rescue and conservation center here in Quang Si Park. The bears live in a huge area in the woods. We have seen these black bears in the zoo in Chiang Mai, Ho Chi Minh City Zoo, Yang Bei Park near Nha Trang, but still I could not pass by these cute animals and hung out with them for half an hour! And no more waterfall needed!

By sheer force of will, I had to tear myself away from contemplating the bears and headed on, to Quang Si Falls itself.
Quang Xi Falls
The path through the forest soon brought me to the waterfall. The water here is bright turquoise in color because of the limestone mixture. I had only seen such blue water in the traventines of Pamukkale in Turkey.
The water in Quang Xi Falls is very bright blue.
I even liked the walk through the forest: it is not hard to walk, there is no need to climb up the mountain, you walk leisurely, stopping at the beautiful places for photographs. There is even a nice view restaurant, but I did not have time to go to it.
It’s nice to walk through the forest and enjoy the views Jungle waterfall in Laos Trees grow right out of the water The view restaurant I didn’t have time to run into
Pretty soon I walked out to an organized swimming spot. Eh, how I longed to swim in that turquoise water! But the weather prevented my plans It’s cold and cold in Luang Prabang in December. Only the bravest few tourists dared to get in the water!
Brought a group of tourists who weren’t afraid to climb into the water
Near the waterfall is equipped with places for picnic and recreation, as well as toilets and changing rooms.
Rest areas are equipped along the way along the waterfall Quang Si
It took me about five minutes to get to the top of Quang Si Falls! It was already much more crowded here, some organized tourists crowds and many locals in cars (!).
It is noisy and crowded near the main waterfall
The power of Quang Xi Falls is very impressive, the splashing water splashes several meters high.
The splashing water from the waterfall reaches several meters.
After standing and enjoying the beauty and power of Quang Xi Falls, I decided to climb up to the source of the waterfall, to the top of the mountain. There are two sides of the waterfall to climb up, I, like most tourists, walked to the right.
The ascent is very difficult, strong slope, ungroomed trail, tree roots serve as steps, there is nothing to grasp, I have to climb up on four legs The situation was complicated by the fact that I was alone, I was in an uncomfortable long skirt (good thing I wore sneakers at least. Yes, I’m completely feral here in Asia and wear sneakers with skirt well nothing, my 100 pairs of shoes are waiting for me soon ) and with a heavy bag with cameras and camera. Halfway through, I already regretted going and wanted to even go back. But when I looked down, I got even more scared and I decided to crawl up anyway.
This is the path I am climbing up The path up to the right of the waterfall
Somehow it was hard for me to get to the top. It was hard, but I got warm! I even took my scarf off Here I am at the top of the waterfall.
I’m at the top of Quang Si Falls.
And then I had one more challenge: to take my shoes off and walk on the slippery rocks in the icy water! But I did it and I’m proud of myself
At the top of the waterfall I had to take my shoes off and walk on the slippery bridges and stones. You have to walk very carefully, the bridges are slippery and unstable.
In general, well, it would be necessary to go down from the other side, but firstly, I did not know what is the path there, and secondly, my shoes and warm socks, I left in front of the entrance to the water on the side from which I went up. I decided to go back down to Quang Si Falls the same way I went up.
Going downhill is usually easier, but not for me (because of my knee, going down now hurts more than going up). The ascent took 15 minutes, the descent took 20 minutes.
And some more pictures of the waterfall.

Useful Tips for Visiting Quang Si Falls
- If you want to take good photos of the waterfall, come to the park before lunch. I was in the park from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and at that time the sun was shining from behind the waterfall, i.e. directly into the lens.
- When the weather is warm, bring your bathing gear, it would be very cool to swim in such beautiful water!
- Be sure to climb to the top! It is one of the most unforgettable experiences, even despite the difficult climb and icy water.
- Take more water with you. A small bottle of water near the waterfall is as much as 1.5 liters in the city (P.S. near a lot of cafes, hungry do not stay ).
