Laucala – a haven for billionaires and just a tropical paradise. Fiji

Laukala Island – a cozy corner of the billionaire. Fiji

Laukala Island enters all the tops and rankings of the world as one of the best places to stay. There are no noisy crowds of tourists, no one is selling “beer, fish, crayfish,” do not offer to take pictures with a monkey, nowhere to advertise “rent a house. Why? Well, it’s simple – because the island Laukala, first, private, and secondly, not everyone can afford to visit here.

In fairness, we should say that the sights, in our usual sense, there is no. There are no gorgeous waterfalls and giant mountains, huge trees and underwater caves. Then why did we list Laucala Island as a world-class attraction? Because it is an attraction in and of itself. So read on and everything will fall into place and all questions will fall away at once.

For starters, a little dry statistics. The island is located in the northeastern part of the Fiji archipelago in close proximity to Cameo Island.

Laukala Island on the map

  • Geographical coordinates -16.757758, -179.683594
  • Distance from Fiji capital Suva approximately 250 km
  • Nearest airport is Laukala Island directly on the island
  • Nearest international airport is Nandi about 325 km away

What does the island paradise look like

The size of the island is modest. The maximum length is about 6.2 km and the width is up to 3.4 km. The area is only 12 km 2 . But it is 12 square kilometers of endless paradise.

It is not an island, but a piece of another world, another universe and another philosophy. And even though with 99.9% probability neither you nor we will ever find ourselves there, the island was, is and will be the benchmark for exotic relaxation and absolute privacy.

Laukala Island

The nature of the island of Laucala is rich and unique. The main goal of the founders of the resort was to preserve the original beauty of the island, which resembles the Garden of Eden.

The island has preserved its unique landscape: volcanic mountains covered with tropical forests and open beautiful beaches, untouched mangroves and coral reefs, abundantly filled with marine flora and fauna. Coconut groves surround the beaches and the dazzling turquoise lagoon.

All the work was done so as to preserve the pristine beauty of the island and not to disturb the ecological natural balance.

A big plus of Laukala island is the presence of several farms with an area of about 240 hectares, which grows a large number of organic tropical and exotic fruits.

So if you are on the Forbes list, or at the very least you own “factories and steamboats”, you have a good chance to get to know Laucala Island from the inside.

As mentioned, the island is privately owned. It was originally owned by Malcolm Forbes (yes, yes, the same Forbes whose list should include a potential vacationer on Laucala). After Malcolm’s death in 1990, Dietrich Mateschitz, the founder of Red Bull, bought the island. Red Bull really seems to be a spur of the moment (at least to some citizens).

The climate of Laucala Island

The entire Fiji archipelago and Laukala Island in particular have no distinct seasonality. It is always summer and always a great season for a relaxing beach holiday. But still the best time is considered the dry period from May to November.

The best beaches of the island are in its northern part, so the resort is located on the northern coast of the island and covers only 4.5 square kilometers. This means that the rest of the area is untouched wild jungle and coconut plantations, home to some of the rarest birds and animals in the archipelago.

Laucala Island Resort Hotel

Laucala Island Resort is actually the only hotel on the island and one of the most expensive hotels in the world. The island is scattered 25 full-fledged secluded villas, built in different styles. They can accommodate up to 80 guests. The area of the residences ranges from 1200 to 11000 square meters. All villas are equipped with the latest design and technology. There are wine cellars with a constant replenishment of the contents.

Laukala Cultural Village

The island retains one of the few traditional villages left in Fiji designed to preserve and showcase local traditions, culture and architecture to visitors.

The main buildings of the village, the bure Kalu, or spirit house, as well as the council and the chief’s hut. Here guests can join in local ceremonies, hear traditional music and even participate in Fijian arts and crafts: weaving or carving and Masi art.

Not far from the village there is a chapel where you can have your wedding.

How to get to Laucala Island

You must first fly to Nandi International Airport on the main island of the Fiji archipelago. Then take a light-engine plane to fly directly to Laukala. Most likely it will be a King Air B200, which belongs to the hotel of the island.

The second option means that you have your own plane. If it is not a Boeing or Airbus, but a stylish Falcon or Cessna, you can fly directly to Laucala from Australia or New Zealand. The local airport is equipped with an 1100 meter long concrete runway and can accommodate aircraft up to 40 tons. Private planes can land on the island, but must follow all international procedures. The private airport Laucala – Island operates day and night.
