Features of vacations in Nepal

Nepal is a small, amazing country. It is a heavenly place for the mountain trekking enthusiast. The country has interesting traditions, culture and unique history. Enjoy the amazing, pristine beauty of nature and man-made monuments. What to see and how much does it cost to vacation in Nepal in 2022 – read the article, getting to know this exotic country better.

Basic information about Nepal

A brief historical background

In ancient times, Nepal lay under the waters of a huge lake. Then – according to legends, by the power of a bodhisattva, according to scientists – after an earthquake – the water came down and the area began to be inhabited. These places were fertile and the people were skillful.

Nepal was the cradle of Buddhism throughout the eastern world. The state flourished during the reign of the Malla dynasty, during the reign of which many monuments were built that have survived to this day. Kathmandu Valley became the capital of the state.

In the 19th century Nepal was attacked by the British, the country struggled and eventually became half a colony. In the mid-20th century, the king had to leave the state, but he was able to return and the country finally entered international relations as a young, emerging nation. At the end of the century, Nepal was once again mired in power struggles. Maoists and royalty, political parties fought over different lines of development for the country. The civil war ended in 2006. Now Nepal has a king, but he has no real power and the country is a republic.

Unfortunately, because of the multiple upheavals, Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. The main source of budget is tourism – and therefore the traveler should pay attention to this country, because it does not lose popularity, although it is poor and undeveloped.

A brief geographical summary

Nepal is located in Asia – between India and China. It is located in the great Himalayan mountains. Nearby is the mysterious autonomous Tibet. Nepal is the highest mountainous country in the world, with almost all of its part covered by the Himalayas. The capital of the country is the city of Kathmandu.

Nepal on the map

Nepal’s climate

The climate of Nepal is extremely diverse. This southern tropical type (the slopes of the Mahabharata), where the temperature stays at about 30 degrees Celsius in summer and half below in winter, and the subtropics, where broadleaved forests are preserved, and moderately cold belt, and alpine meadows, and ice zone – in the Himalayan peaks.

The best time to vacation in Nepal is in the spring or fall. It is too hot and humid in summer and cold in winter.

Safety in Nepal

It is worth considering certain rules of safety and decency, being a tourist in Nepal:

  • Do not leave your belongings unattended;
  • while going out to the locals and excursions to the sacred places, it is worth covering your body: shoulders, legs, backs;
  • do not show off your romantic relations too brightly;
  • it is worth avoiding confrontations with people;
  • since earthquakes are not uncommon in Nepal, you should always be aware of how to behave in such a situation;
  • drink only boiled or bottled water and eat foods that have been heat treated;
  • it is best to have vaccinations against major infectious diseases: typhoid, cholera, hepatitis;
  • During your stay in the mountains, you should worry about planning the ascent in advance and never do it without a guide or professional mountaineer.

Visa to Nepal for Russians

A visa to Nepal can be obtained in two ways. The first is simply to fly into the country, providing an application form, a photo, a fee of around $30. The second is to reinsure yourself and apply early. A visa can be issued within a day. If you are going to do trekking in mountainous areas, you must have a special permit. It is highly recommended to take out and medical insurance.

How to get to Nepal and travel around the country

Once in Kathmandu, there are many ways to get around. There are public transportation, shuttles, cabs, motor rickshaws, and bicycle rickshaws in the capital city. As a rule, public transportation is crowded, so you can take a cab. You will have to pay about 50 rubles for getting on and about 5 more rubles for every kilometer.

It is convenient to travel around the country by bus. You can go on an ordinary one: to experience all the local color – transportation of birds and cattle, some passengers ride on the roof … There is a more familiar to us transport – tourist buses, which are half or twice the price, but you can ride there with appropriate comfort.

It is worth knowing that the ticket for such a good bus better book and buy in advance at the ticket office!

You can try to rent a car. There are international rental agencies in the country, including they provide cars with a driver. But it’s worth perspiring that driving in Nepal is quite sloppy. You can rent a bicycle or motorcycle.

The hotel infrastructure of Nepal

Despite the poverty, the country is developing a tourist infrastructure. There are a lot of hotels in Nepal. In Kathmandu, they meet world standards: swimming pool, service, food. But most of the tourists save money and stay in guest houses, where facilities are minimal – but enough, sometimes there is a garden on the roof, and the owners are friendly.

The country’s major national parks are also equipped with hotel cottages.

Attractions in Nepal

Problems with transportation or insufficient hotel stardom are nothing. Nothing because Nepal is simply mesmerizing in its sights. These are truly wondrous beauties, looking at which the spirit itself rushes to the heavens, to high matter.

Kathmandu

Kathmandu Valley is the first thing to visit once in Nepal. Buddhist temples, shrines and monasteries are admired by any resident of the metropolis, which is so tired of the endless noise and the frantic pace of life. Once you are in this wonderful Asian country, you can truly relax and experience the culture of another people. Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is the best place for this.

Seven sites are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. For example: Durbar Square, the square of palaces. On it is the Hanuman Jokha complex. This royal palace includes 19 courtyards, pagodas, statues, columns, towers. The main entrance is a real golden gate.

Not far from Kathmandu is the Bhaktapur complex. It is an ancient city of the Nevar population, formerly the capital of the Malla kingdom. The complex contains several palaces and squares, a pond, pagodas, and temples.

There is also the Bodnath temple complex in the capital. This is the largest center of Buddhism: dozens of monasteries surround it. Tourists can admire the center of all the splendor – a mighty stupa with steps, prayer flags and nearby benches.

There are other temple complexes in Kathmandu: Pashupatinath, the largest Shiva temple, and Swayambunath, the monkey temple.

You can visit the National Museum of Kathmandu. It consists of the Art and Buddhist Gallery and the Museum of Natural History. In the complex you can learn about the history of Nepal, see weapons, archaeological finds, cult objects, art.

But not only visit temples or museums can be in Kathmandu. From there you can go on excursions to the national parks of Nepal, visiting already natural attractions.

National Parks of Nepal

For example, Sagarmatha National Park is well known. It is also included in the UNESCO list. To visit the park costs only about $ 10 – for this fee you can see Everest itself, see the snow leopard and the panda, meet the local population – the Sherpas. Trekking in this area is very dangerous and should be climbed only if you are prepared and in a professional group.

Annapurna National Park is another beautiful mountain reserve. This park is inhabited by different peoples. On its territory is the world’s greatest dangerous peak Annapurna, Machapuchare, where it is forbidden for man to climb, river valleys, temple complex. The area has plains, bamboo forests, oak groves, and alpine meadows. There live there leopards, deer, martens, monkeys.

One popular park is the Royal Park Chitwan. There you can see tigers and rhinos in the wild, and dare to ride an elephant. You can go on a jeep safari or a canoe trip.

Other interesting places in Nepal

A visit to the city of Lalitpur is suitable for those who want to learn more about the life of the local people. There is an opportunity to get acquainted with the creations of artisans – this jewelry, wood and stone products, paintings and woven carpets. You can buy the works you particularly like for their relatively low price and excellent quality. There is also the only zoo in the country.

Buddhists and those interested in Buddhist culture can go to the birthplace of Buddha in the city Lumbini. There are many Buddhist temples there – and they were built by masters of different countries where this religion is practiced.

Pokhara is the city that covers the largest area of Nepal. The view here is breathtaking. That is why it attracts tourists. One reaches here to visit the Phua Lake. From its shore, it has a special view of the Himalayas. “David’s Fall” – is a waterfall that has its own legend, which says that David went to the river, and the water took him to the deepest depths. He never appeared after that. The attraction of this place is that it seems as if the waterfall pours into a boundless abyss with no bottom.

Entertainment in Nepal

In Nepal, you should enjoy nature and think high thoughts. But what if you want to get down to earth and have some fun? That, too, can be done.

In Kathmandu, for example, the Tamel district is popular with tourists. There are narrow streets, souvenir shops, and bars and clubs. In Tamel you can get a massage – just do not confuse the massage parlor with a salon “other services”.

In Nepal, you can become a little Nepali yourself. So, near the capital are open meditation courses: for about $ 500 you will be taught this useful art.

As for outdoor activities, of course, many people come here for the conquest of the mountains. Trained climbers know everything anyway, and for ordinary tourists in the country there are safer, three-day routes not to the peaks. It is definitely worthwhile to treat any walk in the mountains with due reverence and respect for these wonders of nature, to think about your own safety.

You can also ride a motorcycle in Nepal. Mountain river rafting, rafting, and fishing are also popular.

Cuisine and Shopping in Nepal

Shopping in the traditional style is possible in the capital. In Kathmandu there are large stores, jewelry centers. Fixed prices are only in these solid establishments. But in the Nepali market or in a store you can bargain and buy one of the most interesting souvenirs:

  • Tibetan carpets;
  • …wooden objects..;
  • traditional clothes;
  • cashmere;
  • ritual paintings;
  • Nepalese paper;
  • hemp products (not what you might think);
  • traditional knives;
  • tea and spices;
  • musical instruments;
  • sacred stones or masks.

The cuisine in Nepal is quite simple. Almost all dishes are based on cooked rice, sometimes lentils or soybeans. A popular spice is curry. Potatoes and millet are actively consumed in the mountains, which is close to us as well. Meat is a delicacy for Nepalis, and for some it is unacceptable to eat it. If you do find meat dishes, it will be goat meat, chicken, buffalo meat.

Of the local dishes we can mention “mamo” – large dumplings with lamb and spices, “janja” – homemade beer. A full meal for four will cost about 1,000 rubles. Be sure to finish your lunch or dinner with Nepalese tea.

To summarize: the cost of a trip to Nepal on average is 70 thousand rubles per person. Trekking to Everest is a fascinating activity, which is estimated at 8,500 rubles and lasts 16 days. Living in mid-range hotels, eating local food, you will spend about 1,000 rubles per day.

Nepal is the birthplace of Buddha, the keeper of mystical mysteries and a territory surrounded by mountains. By visiting it, you get a chance to know the meaning of life, to sort out your thoughts, to find peace and true tranquility. Mesmerizing nature will leave a permanent imprint in your memory and you will want to return here again!
