The Palm Jumeirah
The Palm Jumeirah is the largest artificial island in the world that is shaped like a palm tree petal. It is located in the Persian Gulf near the coast of Dubai (UAE) and is connected with it by transport links. On the stems of the palm tree are hotels, on each of the leaves – expensive private villas of the rich and famous, and each villa has its own access to the water. The structure is part of the Palm Islands complex. This is one of the most beautiful and grandiose engineering projects of our time.
The island is created from natural materials – stone and sand, which are held together by the fine calculations of the builders, as well as the protection of nearly three-meter-high breakwater from the same raw materials. Palm Jumeirah consists of a trunk and branches, surrounded by a stone belt that protects it from erosion. Visiting this landmark is one of the highlights of the trip for tourists.

History and origin of the name
The idea for this unusual structure appeared back in the 90s, when the free space on the suitable coastal strip of the emirate ran out. The project was intended to increase the area for further development of the tourist industry: beaches, hotels, villas, entertainment centers.
Construction of this architectural marvel began in 2001 on the initiative of the monarch of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed. The name of the island (Palm Jumeirah) translates as “Crown of Palms. The characteristic shape was chosen not only in honor of the emirate’s symbol, but also based on a careful calculation. Having a relatively small size in diameter – 5.5 kilometers – the trunk has 17 branches with a total coastline of 56 kilometers. This is nine times more than if the creators had conceived the island as circular.
The builders used 94 million cubic meters of sand and 5.5 million cubic meters of stone. With such an amount of material it would be possible to build a wall 2.5 meters high, which would encircle the Earth on the equator. The entire structure is supported by its own weight – there is no concrete or steel reinforcements. However, the years of existence have proven the viability of such a “natural” project.

Attractions and entertainment
Some of the highlights of the island are: Aquaventure Waterpark – the best in Europe and the Middle East, Dolphin Bay, The Lost Chambers Aquarium and Atlantis, The Palm, which houses the mentioned attractions.

Lost Chambers Aquarium
Thanks to changes in the emirate’s legislation, anyone can buy real estate on the Palm Jumeirah with full and unconditional ownership. But the prices here are also very high.
You can visit the Aquaventure Water Park any day of the week, but the duration of its work varies depending on the time of year. Usually this period from 10 am to sunset. Challenges of the island
Up close, the Palm Jumeirah complex is not at all what it is from afar. From a bird’s-eye view, Palma looks luxurious. But on the ground everything is very dull and lifeless. And because the water in the canals stagnates, there is a nasty smell in the air, as if something is decomposing. So buying a villa on the leaves of Palma Jumeirah is not the best investment of a few million dollars.
Palm Jumeirah – a man-made wonder in Dubai
Palm Jumeirah is the largest artificial island on Earth, a true man-made miracle. Its outline follows the shape of a palm tree (trunk and 16 symmetrically arranged leaves), which for protection from the destructive action of the waves is surrounded by a breakwater in the form of a half moon. The island has a huge number of luxury private villas, hotels, skyscrapers, shopping and entertainment centers, parks, beach clubs.
Palm Jumeirah is located in the United Arab Emirates, on the shores of the Persian Gulf, next to the coast of Dubai. Incidentally, this is one of the three islands of the Palm Islands complex, increasing the coastline of the emirate of Dubai to 520 km. And although the Palm Jumeirah Island is smaller than Jebel Ali Palm and Deira Palm, but it was created first and thanks to this it has become the “business card” of the UAE.
To visit the United Arab Emirates, in particular Dubai, it is necessary at least to see the Palm Jumeirah and appreciate what can create talented people, knowledge and money.
History of the creation of the Palm Jumeirah
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
The idea to create a unique man-made island in the Persian Gulf belongs to UAE Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He came up with the idea back in the 1990s, when there was no suitable space left on the plots of land off the coast of the emirate of Dubai for the construction of new buildings. The construction of the wonder-island, designed to extend the emirate’s coastline to promote tourism, began in 2001.
It took 94,000,000 cubic meters of sand and 5,500,000 cubic meters of stone – enough material to build a 2.5-meter high wall around the equator of the globe. The main difficulty was that the sand from the UAE deserts turned out to be unsuitable for the construction of the artificial embankment: it was very fine, so it was easily washed away by the water. Incredible efforts were made to take tons of sand from the seabed and transport it to the coastline of the emirate. Neither cement nor steel reinforcements were needed to create the sand embankment – the entire structure is held together by its own weight alone. Nevertheless, this unique project has proved its viability, as the Palm Jumeirah has successfully existed since 2006.
“Palm crown” – this is how “Palm Jumeirah” is translated, and in the photo from above it is clearly visible that the outline of the man-made mound completely repeats the silhouette of a palm tree. Interestingly, the choice of such a shape is not only due to the fact that the palm tree is the symbol of the emirate of Dubai. Simply, with a relatively small diameter of 5.5 km, the trunk has 16 leafy branches with a total coastline of 56 km – if the island had a round shape, this figure would be 9 times smaller. The artificial island is surrounded by a crescent-shaped breakwater that stretches for 11 km. To protect the island and to attract divers to the coast of the emirate, all this splendor complemented by a coral reef with two sunken F-100 planes.
Attractions of the resort area
Tourists arriving to the resorts of Dubai (UAE) are offered a variety of leisure options: beach holidays, diving courses, walks by sea, helicopter flights, all sorts of entertainment in hotels, activities in fitness clubs, visits to SPA centers, museum tours and much more.

As for the Aquaventure Water Amusement Park, it is recognized as one of the largest not only in the UAE, but also in the entire Middle East: under its territory given 17 hectares of land, and water for the arrangement of attractions used more than 18 000 000 liters. Non-Muslims can visit the shrine on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 10.00 am, but only if accompanied by a local UAE guide. For more information on the mosque see this page.
Holidays by the Sea
The most pleasant and comfortable weather conditions for seaside holidays on the Palm Jumeirah are in mid-autumn. This is the time of the “velvet” season in the Emirate of Dubai, when the water temperature in the Persian Gulf is kept at a level of +20 – +23 ° C, when it will be nice and sunbathe, and hide in the shade of a beach umbrella.
The coast of Jumeirah is a series of beach areas covered with snow-white soft sand, with clear water, with comfortable and convenient descents into the water. There are different beaches:
- Free, which can be visited by both residents of Dubai and tourists who come to the UAE;
- Private, belonging to a particular apartment complex or hotel – as a rule, the entrance to them is closed;
- Paid public parks-beaches.
Of the public beaches is Jumeirah Public Beach, which is located near the Dubai Marina Hotel and Jumeirah Mosque. Although it is unequipped, but very spacious and clean.
Among the beaches belonging to the hotels, you should pay attention to the beach of the hotel “Atlantis”. After all, not only guests of “Atlantis” can relax on it, but also holidaymakers who have decided to visit the Aquaventure water park. A visit to this private beach is included in the price of the entrance ticket to the water park.
There is a beach on the island called Shoreline, which belongs to a residential complex of the same name with 20 high-rise houses. It is noteworthy that the entrance to Shoreline is allowed not only to people from the area, but also to ordinary tourists. The residential complex is guarded, so the rest there is completely safe.

How to get to Palma
The famous resort is located in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Dubai, and it is from Dubai to get there.
The easiest and fastest way to get to The Palm Jumeirah is by rented car or cab. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from Dubai International Airport, but rush hour traffic jams are usually limited to the places where tour groups stop for photo shoots.
Directly on the territory of the resort you can travel by cab or by high-speed train on the monorail. The monorail begins at Gateway Towers station (this is at the very beginning of the “trunk” of Palma), the total length is almost 5.5 km. The standard interval between trips is 15 minutes, the total travel time from the start to the end stop (there are 4 in total) is 15 minutes. Monorail operating hours: daily from 8:00 to 22:00.
Problems of Palma Jumeirah
Although the island is very beautiful, environmentalists in the UAE and around the world are worried about the changes taking place in the flora and fauna of the Persian Gulf. In response to multiple demands to make the lives of sea creatures safe, authorities in the Emirate of Dubai have built artificial reefs off the coast and plan to power all the artificial islands from environmentally friendly sources.
The presence of the breakwater also creates certain problems. It is extremely important for protection from waves, but it also leads to stagnant water in the bays and provokes unpleasant smell from it. The UAE government has made several attempts to solve the problem, but it hasn’t yet succeeded.
There is another important question: “How long can such a huge but too fragile embankment, which is affected by climate change and the formidable waves that wash the sand out of it?” The authors of the project argue that over the next 800 years there is no need to worry, and persuade investors to buy “a piece” of the amazing real estate in the emirate. The more so because the emirate’s legislation has been amended to allow anyone to buy real estate here with absolute title.
- During your vacation by the sea on the Palm Jumeirah Island (Dubai, UAE) it is forbidden to take photos, smoke hookahs and drink alcoholic beverages, sunbathing topless. If you ignore the listed rules established by the emirate authorities, you can be fined.
- According to many tourists, the view of unique resort area of Dubai is impressive only from the height, but from the ground everything is much more prosaic. That is why it is advisable to travel here not by cab, but by monorail. It is laid not too high, but still a few meters above the ground.
- Go to Palm Jumeirah is better to go alone, without a tour. So you can at your discretion to plan the time and duration of the trip. By the way, you can go with a view to have time to rest and walk, and watch the sunset. “The Aquaventure.
- The final stop of the high-speed train is at the famous “Atlantis”. The structure is certainly luxurious, but the grounds are closed to the public. A trip to the hotel will be worthwhile only when a visit to the Aquaventure water park is planned.
- If you move on the right side of Palma Jumeirah, you will see the famous Burj Al Arab Hotel. If you move to the left side, you will see the Dubai Marina.
