Skógafoss Falls and Viking Treasures in Iceland

Skaugafoss

Skaugafoss is a waterfall in the south of Iceland. It is unique in that it comes from two glaciers at once: Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull.

A staircase of 370 steps leads to the top of the waterfall, over which you will be rewarded with an impressive view of the southern coast of Iceland. It is also the starting point for the Fimmvördühuls Pass, another popular hiking route.

From a height of 60 meters, the heavy curtain of water looks stunning, and the walk in close proximity envelops visitors in a cloud of splashing, refracted light and roaring water. On a sunny day, one or two rainbows can be seen in the clubs of splashing waterfall.

Skaugafoss, along with Seljalandsfoss, is often included in the route of the Golden Ring of Iceland. You get great pictures here, especially in winter when the northern lights dance in the sky above the falls.

Is there gold behind Skaugafoss Falls?

According to legend, in a cave beneath the waterfall a Viking named Tracy hid all his accumulated wealth. Many have tried to find the chest of gold, and, as the story goes, one young man almost succeeded. He tied a rope to the handle ring of the chest and pulled it out of the cave. However, he only brought the torn ring to the surface. It was later installed on the door of the church in Skowgar.

Downstream, the river is rich in salmon. From July through October, fishermen with fishing rods can often be found on the shore.

Skogafoss Waterfall – description

Skogafoss has become the most famous waterfall in Iceland. Thanks to it and the picturesque nature, tourists are increasingly visiting the country. Once this place was under the thickness of the sea water. But the coastline receded further. In its place were the cliffs that stretched for hundreds of kilometers. They and some more mountain peaks create a kind of boundary between the lowland and mountain parts of Iceland.

The waterfall is located in the southern part of the island on the Skaugau River. Near him there is a glacier, the name of which is difficult not only to pronounce, but also to read – Eyjafjallajökull. It is from this glacier that the Skougau River originates.

The size of the waterfall is impressive. It is 25 m wide and 60 m high. Therefore, Skogafoss is always surrounded by splashes and water dust. This gives rise to unusual phenomena. On a sunny day, tourists can see a rainbow. But not an ordinary one, but a double one.
