View of Blanes

General Information

Blanes is one of the oldest towns of the Costa Brava. It is located in the province of Girona in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. Despite its small size (the city has slightly less than 40 thousand people) it is one of the most popular places in Spain. The main feature of this place can be called a unique atmosphere in which peace and quiet are combined with a developed tourist infrastructure and historical monuments – with picturesque bays and clean beaches. At the same time, the level of crime in the city is at the lowest level, so you can walk its streets in complete peace.

The Sa Palomera cliff, which has several viewing platforms, divides the entire Blanes Costa Brava coast into 2 parts – northern and southern. The first is the port with fishing piers, marina and an old housing estate. The second part of town is occupied by a tourist quarter with numerous stores, souvenir shops, hotels and restaurants. Here you can also find a lot of pensions and campsites for cars.

Hotels in Blanes

Another “chip” of this place is the main Spanish fiesta called the Feast of St. Anna and St. Joaquim attracting an incredible number of participants (not less than 500 thousand). The fiesta celebrations lasts 4 days and falls in the third or fourth week of July. During this period, there are a lot of fireworks to please not only the kids but the adults as well. The final show takes place on Sunday night.

Interesting fact! Since Blanes is the first west coast settlement, it is often called the “Gate of the Costa Brava”. To celebrate this, a metal construction which resembles an inverted V has been placed on one of the beaches.

Attractions in Blanes (Spain) are a huge number of historical, natural, architectural and religious sites, which will take at least a week to explore. And for those who came to the city just for a couple of days, we advise to pay attention to the most interesting tourist places.

San Juan Castle

The San Juan Castle, located at the top of the mountain of the same name, was built in the middle of the 13th century. At that time it served as a reliable protection against the sea flibusters who were regularly attacking the local residents. It is now one of the main historical symbols of Blanes. Sadly, all that remains of this once majestic castle is the Watchtower – which affords a stunning view of the town – and a small part of the fortification wall, which shelters the snow-white chapel of St John at the foot of it.

Botanical Garden in Blanes (Spain), created by the German industrialist Carl Faust in the 20s of the last millennium is one of the most famous arboretums in Europe. The entire territory of the garden, which occupies at least 4 hectares, is divided into 3 climate zones – the Mediterranean, subtropical and temperate. There are about 3 thousand plants, many of which are endangered.

Marimutra Botanical Garden

Numerous tourists are attracted not only by the rare vegetation, but also by its beauty. Firstly, it is right on the seashore and secondly, there are several cliffs next to it that offer a picturesque view of the Costa Brava.

Promenade in Blanes

Another important landmark of Blanes is the city’s central promenade, a favorite vacation spot not only for visitors, but also for most locals. The promenade that connects the seaport with the beach of Abanel is about 3 km long. An endless line of cafes, restaurants, bars, stores, kiosks with ice cream, snacks and drinks, monuments, sculptures and playgrounds stretch along this entire line.

Gothic Fountain

The octagonal fountain, created in the first half of the 15th century at the request of the wool manufacturers’ guild, is a striking example of traditional Spanish Gothic. Originally this gloomy medieval construction, consisting of 3 levels and decorated with gargoyles, stood in the central town square. But apparently it blended so poorly with its surroundings that the local authorities decided to move it to Ample Street.

Benidorm in Spain, places of interest

The top 5 best attractions of Blanes in Spain with photos and descriptions completes Spanish Square and Dintre Avenue. This part of the city, stretching no more than 200 meters, gathers everything you need for a pleasant and wholesome holiday: summer cafes with verandas, boutiques, apartments, coffee houses, etc.

Spain Square and Dintre Street

In addition, on Dintre Avenue, which runs along the coast, you can see a shady alley and a huge village market where you can buy a variety of fruits and vegetables. Well, the main feature of this place can be called a peculiar architecture, represented by old houses with unusual facades.

Looking at photos of Blanes in Spain, it is impossible not to notice its amazing beaches, attracting a huge number of tourists. In the vicinity of the city there are several resort areas, 3 of which were awarded the “Blue Flag”. Let’s talk about them.

Sa Abanel Beach

Sa Abanel, which is just under 3 km long, is located on the left side of the cliff Sa Palomera (the “new part” of town). The main features of this beach are the coarse light sand, of which only occasional pebbles can be found, easy access to the sea and a picturesque promenade running along the entire coastline. Playa de S’Abanell infrastructure is quite developed – there are showers, toilets (closes at 21:00), paid sun loungers with umbrellas, professional lifeguards. In addition, there are many outdoor cafes, which serve delicious boutifarra (Catalan sausage), and several stores. There is also volleyball, surfing, sailing and waterslides. For children, there are equipped playgrounds. If you want, you can rent a small boat.

San Francesc Beach

A small family beach – just under 200 m. Located in a quiet cove, the hilly shores of which are covered with a dense pine forest. Coarse sand is covered, although sometimes there are small rocky formations. The sea here is warm, transparent and very clean. The line of shallow water is wide enough and the entry into the water is shallow.

Along the entire coastline there is a special asphalt path with restaurants, food stands and equipped places for recreation. Besides there are toilets, showers, parking, catamaran rentals, umbrellas and sun loungers.

Cala de Sant Francesc is loved not only by couples with small children, but also by fans of diving, snorkeling and other “underwater sports”. That said, it’s better to bring your own mask and flippers – they cost more here. If you want to take some beautiful panoramic pictures, walk up the hill on the narrow pathway located at the southern end of the beach.

Beach Blanes

The central beach of Blanes, “made” in the shape of a crescent, stretches from the river port to the rock of Sa Palomera. Its length is about 600 m, which manages to accommodate a huge number of holidaymakers. An important difference of this place is the transparent sea and the coarse light yellow sand, which does not stick to your shoes or clothes.

Not far from Platja de Blanes is the seaport. Along the main promenade are many cafes, snack bars, restaurants and small stores. Professional lifeguards are responsible for the safety of tourists. Showers are frequent, but there is only one toilet. Umbrellas and sun loungers can be taken for 5-6 €. It should also be noted that a few meters from the beach there is a city highway, so you need to watch the children with care. The best thing is that you can easily reach the old part of the town, famous for its unique historical sights.

Blanes (Costa Brava, Spain) offers many accommodation options, among which you can find both budget hostels, and expensive hotels, equipped with a swimming pool, fitness centers, spas, free parking and other amenities. It should also be noted that lodging in the city is located not only on the first line, but also at a fairly long distance from the sea (there, too, you can find good options). But with the Russian-speaking staff in Blanes did not work, so we advise to arm a translator.
