The longest coastline in the world

The longest coastlines in the world

Geographic lists often rank countries by various size parameters, such as area, and sometimes these rankings are pretty easy to guess. But it can be more difficult to identify the countries with the longest shorelines; each small cove and fjord lengthens the shoreline measurement, and surveyors must decide how deep to measure each of these curves and depressions. And for countries that have offshore islands, including all those on the country’s common shoreline, can make a big difference in the calculations – and hence the ranking on lists like this one.

Note that as mapping methods are updated, the numbers below may change. New equipment may produce more accurate measurements.

Canada

Distance: 125,567 miles (202,080 km)

Most states in Canada have coastlines in the Pacific, Atlantic, or Arctic Oceans. If you walk 12 miles of coastline a day, it would take you 33 years to cover it all.

Norway

Distance: 64,000 miles (103,000 km)

In 2011, the Norwegian Mapping Authority recalculated the length of Norway’s coastline to include all 24,000 islands and fjords, exceeding its previous estimate of 52,817 miles (85,000 km). It could stretch around the Earth two and a half times.

Indonesia

Distance: 33,998 miles (54,716 km)

The 13,700 islands that make up Indonesia make up most of the coastline. Because it is located in a collision zone between several plates of the earth’s crust, the region is prone to earthquakes, potentially altering the country’s vast coastline.

Russia

Distance: 23,397 miles (37,653 km)

In addition to the coasts of the Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic Oceans, Russia also borders several seas, including the Baltic, Black, Caspian, and Azov Seas. Many of the country’s major cities and tourist resorts are coastal.

Philippines

Distance: 22,549 miles (36,289 km)

About 60 percent of the Philippines’ population (and 60 percent of its cities) live on the coast. Manila Bay alone, its main seaport, is home to 16 million people. The capital Manila is one of the most densely populated in the world.

Japan

Distance: 18,486 miles (29,751 km)

Japan consists of 6,852 islands. Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu are the four largest. As an island nation, fishing, aquaculture, and even whaling have been important to its inhabitants throughout the country’s long history. The “ring of fire” earthquake zone is home to an earthquake strong enough to be measured by scientists every three days in Tokyo.

Australia

Distance: 16,006 miles (25,760 km)

Eighty-five percent of Australia’s population lives on its coasts, with 50 to 80 percent of each state living in coastal urban areas, so the population is not only concentrated on its coasts, but also mostly concentrated in large cities, leaving much of the continent naturally deserted and empty of people.

United States

Distance: 12,380 miles (19,924 km)

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the coastline may be 12,000 miles, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates that the total coastline is 95,471 miles. But that also includes the shoreline of territories such as Puerto Rico, the shoreline along the Great Lakes, and “sounds, bays, rivers and streams have been included at the top of tidal waters or the point where tidal waters narrow to a width of 100 feet,” he noted.

New Zealand

Distance: 9,404 miles (15,134 km)

New Zealand’s vast coastline includes more than 25 reserves. Surfers will love Surf Highway 45 Taranaki, which offers some of the best surfing in the country.

China

Distance: 9,010 miles (14,500 km)

Rivers are among the forces (such as tectonics, typhoons, and currents) that have shaped China’s coastline, such as depositing sediment on its beaches. In fact, the Yellow River is the largest river in the world in terms of the amount of sediment it contains, and the Yangtze River is the fourth largest in terms of water flow.
