Kinchkha waterfall, Georgia: photo, how to get there, map
Photo review of one of the most striking sights of Imeretia – Kinchkha waterfall. Description, photos, how to get there, what else to see nearby.
Kinchkha waterfalls are quite close to Kutaisi and only 8 km from Okatse Canyon, so it’s easy to see both places in one trip. For the sake of good photos it’s better to go to the waterfall in the morning, by 9-10 o’clock.
In the hot summer it is better to walk around the canyon Okatse first, and then go to the waterfalls – to swim in the pools, where Georgian princes used to splash, and feel like a new man. True, there is a nuance: the canyon opens for tourists only at 10:00, so you will reach the waterfalls in the afternoon. So you have to choose – or good shots, or a tour of the canyon and then a nice swim.
Description and Photos of Kinchha Falls
Generally, “Kinchkha waterfall” is not quite the correct name. The correct name is Okatse waterfall, and Kinchkha is the name of the village near where it is located. Moreover, it is not one waterfall, but several – I counted 4 of them there. The main waterfall is the highest one in Georgia – 125 meters.
If you stand facing the main waterfall, then on the left hand there is another waterfall and a fairly serious precipice – you can get to the very edge of the waterfall and stand on top of it – it really tickles the nerves.
There are also several natural pools where you can swim – I was in July, though the water is cool, but not too cool.
If you walk two hundred meters to the right from the main waterfall Kinchha along the river bed, you will see quite a picturesque canyon and several small waterfalls:
How much time do you need?
If you just want to take a walk, admire the power of the elements and climb the rocks, an hour is more than enough. If with swimming, then all of an hour and a half, so that there is no rush.
Important! How to buy good insurance in Georgia, cheap:
Good working insurance was not easy to find before, and now it is even harder because of the constant fluctuations of the ruble’s exchange rate to the world currencies. For the last few years I have been taking out insurance through an online service Cherehapa – here you can compare products from different insurers and choose exactly what suits you best. I also recommend reading the detailed article on choosing the right travel insurance – it may protect you from unnecessary overpayment and more serious trouble.
How to get to Kinchha Falls
The coordinates of Kinchha Falls: 42.49489, 42.55054. From Okatse Canyon to the waterfalls about 8 km along an excellent new road. The road ends with paid parking (1 lari, 25 rub). You can see the waterfalls for free. From the parking to the site in front of the main waterfall walk about 7 minutes.
You can drive from Kutaisi to Kinchkha on your own car, or you can take a transfer from Gotrip, a Georgian online booking service (55 km, from 29$ for all passengers). You can also book an individual tour from Kutaisi to the most interesting places: Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Monastery and Kinchkha waterfalls.
I also recommend to read my review of my three excursions in Imeretia: “Canyons and waterfalls – the secret treasures of Western Georgia” , “Kutaisi. History and Nature of Imeretia” and “Prometheus Caves and Tskaltubo Resort”.
By car we go through the village of Khoni in the direction of Okatse Canyon (we pass by its visitor’s center and continue to the end of the paved road).
From Kutaisi to Kinchha drive about an hour, from Okatse about 10 minutes. By the way, the best way to travel around Georgia is to take a car with Localrent or Economybookings – both are aggregators of all current offers, you can choose the best by price and other parameters. In terms of prices, convenience and transparency of conditions these are the best car finders in Georgia. Whatever blogs and forums you read, all roads lead to them.
You can take a cab from the Okatse Canyon Visitor Center to the waterfalls. There are a lot of them, but the price during the season is unscrupulous, 30 lari ($11, 750 rubles) for 8 km on an ideal road.

Kinchkha – one of the highest and most powerful waterfalls in Georgia
Kinchkha waterfall is a natural landmark of Western Georgia. It is located in the canyon of the Okatse River. This place is quite wild and uncivilized, but even more attractive and mysterious.
Kinchkha waterfall is located in the municipality of Khoni, which in turn is located in Imeretia in western Georgia.
The nearest settlement to the waterfall is the village of Zeda Kinchkha. It is located 26 kilometers from Honi and is known only for its close proximity to the natural attractions of the region.
Honi municipality is also known for natural treasures such as the canyons of the Okatse River.
The lower canyon is quite popular with tourists for its excursion trail and observation platform over the abyss.
The upper canyon is located near the village of Zeda Kinhcha at an altitude of 1020 meters above sea level. Here you can see the Kinhcha waterfall. Also this place is interesting by the ponds, which in ancient times served as prince’s baths.

About the waterfall
The waterfall Kinchkha is a cascade of waterfalls, consisting of two steps flowing into the Okatse River. The name of the waterfalls was given in connection with the name of their location – the settlements Zeda Kinchcha and Kveda Kinchkha.
The first stage of the cascade is a waterfall with a height of 100 meters, located at a distance of 1000-1100 meters above sea level. It is a beautiful and powerful waterfall.
At the point where the falls Kinchcha formed a small lake, the water from which comes down the second stage of the cascade. This waterfall is weaker and lower in height than the Kinhcha waterfall – only 20 meters. The location of this waterfall is in the vicinity of the village of Kveda Kinhcha.
The location of the waterfall also attracts tourists with its old bathing holes. Ponds, which appear in the Upper Canyon, were used by the princes as bathing places. This is evidenced by special buildings made of white stone. They are located 100-150 meters above the waterfall.
How to get there
The closest major city to the Okatse Canyons and Kinchha Falls is Kutaisi, the center of Imeretia. From Kutaisi, drive north toward the town of Khoni, the center of the Khoni municipality. The next village on the road to the waterfall will be Matkhodzhi.
Behind the village there is a fork in the road, you should take the northeastern direction, which will lead you to the village of Kveda-Gordi and then to Zeda-Gordi.
From the village of Zeda-Gordi you should continue northwards to the villages of Zeda-Kinchha and Kveda-Kinchha. From them to the canyons, 7-8 kilometers.
The big waterfall is visible from afar, but it is better to keep the course not on it, but a little bit to the right, then you will come right to the cascade of waterfalls and white stone bathing places. To get to the lower waterfall, you can move along the Okatse River.
There are no signposts in this area, so you have to ask locals for directions.
Kinchha Falls and the upper canyon Okatse great for fans of extreme tourism, but will also be of interest to ordinary tourists – fans of unusual natural phenomena. The waterfall is striking for its beauty and force of the head, as well as the atmosphere of untouched nature, the absence of human influence.
